Hello everybody and welcome back to another video and if you’re here for the very first time it’s really nice to meet you I’m Jane and my husband Mike is behind the camera We’re British early retirees we have no debt and we’ve paid off the mortgage and we live a Thrifty
Frugal and money-saving life here in Britany in Northwest France and every Sunday we bring to you an aspect of our private life of the things that we’ve done this week and how it’s saved us money and how we’re going to share that with you let’s take a look at what we’ve been up
To so it’s no spend February for us and that means we obviously pay our bills we put fuel in the car we buy food but we don’t spend any money on anything else if it is in the budget for example paying the electric or you know all the
Usual things of course we pay everything like that if the pets got sick of course we would pay for that but there is no discretionary spending or extra spending like that in our no spend F and it’s going well so things that we’re going to share with you today uh we’re going to
Share with you that we had a free day out and let me talk about that in in a way of how we do that we love to go and visit places we’ve only lived here for four or five years and there are still places that we haven’t seen and we like
To go somewhere and have a look around and have a walk about and a look and it’s an ideal chance for us to do something that costs us nothing obviously it cost us fuel in our car but we stick to our fuel budget I’m going to
Share with you as well at the end of this video another finished Quil because that was our aim this month wasen to my aim this month was to finish three qus and I’ve got another one finished and I also have a little story with with you
For you at the end of the video that you might like let’s uh watch what we’ve been up To Well we are in Northwest France where we live and we are out on a walk this morning to to A really lovely uh estery and by the side of it is this gorgeous old town called laou and we’ve just arrived so first things we have to
Do is uh give the dogs a good walk so give them a and the tiny dogs so good walk for my dogs is about you know 20 minutes 20 minutes so here we are let me spin you around the church in the background the riv side
One of the things that we are talking between cars here absolutely totally adore about France it’s everywhere it’s completely uncommercial I keep thinking about UK out of p park I would have there would be cafes and visitor centers and there would be um boat trips goodness knows what
Else is here and here there is nothing lots of work going on excuse that everyday everyday people doing their everyday work and we are going to share our walk around this lovely old town with you what a nice day to get out and about let’s turn around to show these beautiful old
Boats look at those it’s lovely A [Applause] N The Aahah You In a no spend month we like to set ourselves challenges of things that we want to get done in that month and I wanted to get three quilts that I’ve got in process finished now I’ve completely finished to and I’ve got one more to go which I hope to finish within this month
Now I get asked two questions quite regularly about quilting the first question I’ve got asked is where in your budget do you fund quilting now in a spend month we give ourselves pocket money of which we can do whatever we want with it and we take €50 each and if
I want to spend that on cting material I do in a spend month I buy my fabric from different places to keep the cost low uh for example my batting I buy my batting on a complete roll so if I want to do that I will keep money back each and
Every month for a few months to buy a complete roll to make it cheaper I buy the majority of my fabric is secondhand and I buy that from charity shops or people destashing I will sometimes buy yardage fabric on the meter also from people who have got too much fabric and
They want to get rid of it and I find most of that on Facebook Marketplace the next question I get asked is Jane why do you not sell your quilts there’s a very easy answer for that there really isn’t a market for them here in France quilting and quilt
Making is not popular um if I search online there are very very few stores that sell quilt material there’s quilt material that you can buy in the UK US Canada Australia that doesn’t even they don’t even sell it here I can’t even buy it here so it’s not a popular craft here
And people are they don’t want them so and I’m a fast quilter and it takes me 50 hours from start to finish to make a full-size bed quilt and people will not pay for my time and on top of that you know in places like America people will
Pay $500 or $600 for a quilt something that they is part of their Heritage part of their culture something that is very very loved here they wouldn’t give me 50 for it it wouldn’t even cover my costs and you know I’m not going to be making my quilts and shipping them to America
Where people are you know there is already a massive Quilt Market so that’s the reason that I make them primarily to donate to raise money for charity and that’s why I don’t sell them the last time I shared a qu with you you said the kindest and loveliest
Things and we do appreciate apprciate that and you also said some of you said I would love to make quilts but I have no idea where to start it must be really difficult to make so I thought I would share with you a quilt that I made 12
Years ago and it’s still going strong I didn’t have a clue what I was doing I copied people on YouTube I i’ learned from books I learned from books from the library and here is a Quil and I made this in 2012 and I made it in red white
And blue fabrics for a variety of reasons it was the London Olympics that year so I made it in red white and blue it was also the Queen’s golden jubilee so she was 50 years uh the queen so that’s why I made it in red white and
Blue and on top of that it was a really special year for us because that was the year after 16 years of being together that we got married so it’s kind of a wedding quilt it’s the juilee quilt and it is my Olympic quilt and this year is
Another Olympic year so we were in the UK for the London Olympics and now we are in France for the Paris Olympics and I will show you our latest my latest and here is my latest red white and blue Quil the pattern is called Indigo Way by Bonnie Hunter it was one
Of her three patterns that she puts out thank you Bonnie Hunter for doing that um it took me about 50 hours to make this including quilting it so I’m I’m really really pleased with this but I need to say to you you know it’s taken
Me 12 years to get to to this standard and anybody out there who’s a beginner and you’re quilting for the first time keep at it you will get better a lot of this is thrifted fabric um I’ll get mik to bring look at this so I keep thinking to myself pillow case
Pillowcase sheet which takes up a lot of this quilt uh the red fabric is something out the stash that I’d had for years on end and on the back of this this is a vintage french bed sheet so that’s how I I keep the cost of my
Quilting down so there you go that’s another finish this month come back in a week’s time for my next finish or at least my progress towards the Finish thank you so much for watching thanks to everybody who likes comments subscribers all subscribers old and new the channel is growing thanks to all of
You we’ll see you soon bye for now Sh

Lovely village & beautiful quilt👍🏴
Thanks for the take along to the beautiful town and the show and tell with your gorgeous quilts. Love this channel more and more.
I love these outings! Thanks for taking us along. The towns are so charming, even on a gloomy day!
Love your sewing videos.
What a beautiful little town! Thank you for taking us along and sharing it with us all.
What a lovely video! A bit of travel…a bit of quilting…perfection!
Thank you for sharing your day out with us! I enjoyed every second of it and it was nice to see your sweet pups!
Love your quilts, Jane. Something I want to do more of in future years.
I made the lentil pancakes while I watched this….. but mine were not as good as yours. More practice needed. Plus, what kind of lentils work best? I used the red lentils but I think the brown lentils which are bigger and more solid might work better. My batch only made 5 too, and I measured, so perhaps the bigger lentils are better. Thank you for sharing. 😊🇦🇺
I loved hearing all about your quilts! They are all lovely! I am impressed at how you are self taught! Bravo! 👍❤️
Hi Jane. Thank you for sharing again. Your quilts are lovely. There isnt a great interest in buying home made quilts in Australia, but I attend a sewing group and we make quilt tops that are donated to a charity and warm fabric is sewn on the back. These are given to homeless people, refuges etc.
Also, I have just adopted a rescue cat. She is so precious. She must not have been in a very good state when she was found because she had to be shaved. Her fur was so matted.
Looking forward to seeing you next quilt.
Absolutely stunning quilt 🎉❤
The quilt is spectacular! Interesting those country towns in France aren’t commercialized.
Beautiful quilts clever lady 😁
Absolutely beautiful quilt!!! Love the pattern and how encouraging you are. Thx for sharing.
Oh, Jane, your latest quilt is stunning. I have made many quilts. I appreciate your thrifty way of funding your crafts.
Loved the video. Enjoy the travel around the countryside seeing something I have not seen before. Your quilts are beautiful. Well done. Each video gives me a nugget to add to my tool box of frugal living. Thank you.
I love the proof that no buy doesn’t mean no fun 😊 My first ever no buy February is going well. Today my 10 year old asked me to buy her new sunscreen and my 4 year old told her it was no buy February 😂 We had fun at the park and we do have sunscreen already so she used that .
Mary & Dolly, your parents are so terrific to take you on their beautiful outings around France! Your mom’s quilts are beautiful! Thank you for sharing them!

It is wonderful to see all the towns in France and to not see the commercializations that is everywhere here in North America.
I didn't notice any litter (rubbish) or graffiti either.
You’re lucky to live in a beautiful place. Thank you for the tour.
Thank you for taking me to NW France this Sunday afternoon. I loved your film footage and the music you or Mike chose to accompany it. Your videos are always such a treat.
Oh Jane the quilts are breathtaking. Just beautiful. Your puppies were so happy to be out with you all. ❤❤
I have been to Paris but the French countryside is certainly in my future. Your quilts are lovely. One of my earliest memories is watching my grandmother and her 8 sisters hand quilting in a circle. Learning to quilt is on my bucket list now that I am retired.
I loved seeing the beautiful town. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
Beautiful little town , fantastic scenery and lovely to see the girls enjoying the day out with you and mike 😊
That little town looked like it was straight out of a storybook! Beautiful!
Another beautiful quilt! What a treat! I also enjoyed the day trip with you, it's a very pretty town ❤
Your quilts are wonderful. Thank you for taking us with.
Along with everyone else, may I say that your quilts are absolutely stunning ! You are correct, that here in the US, quilts like the ones you've made, tend to fetch a pretty penney. People do keep them as heirlooms and pass them down to younger family members. Interesting, how different cultures value crafts in different ways. Lovely road trip as well. Tyvm❤
Just like the Payette river in idaho it is not commercialized and it is very lovely
Absolutely love that last quilt you showed!❤️ Do you hand quilt your Quilts??
Great content
You’re so talented ❣️ those quilts are absolutely gorgeous ❣️😊
Both of your quilts are gorgeous!
Thank you for sharing your lovely day. I enjoy finding free things to do- today was a plan for watching the Lunar New Year Parade. But it was raining and I felt bad for the folks walking in the parade. Your lovely video and beautiful quilts brightened my time inside!
I love the red, white and blue quilt!!
Beautiful quilts! Thanks for the tour of the town.😊
Do you have alot of home? Seattle does. You are so talented 😊
I love a beautiful peaceful walk.
Your patchwork quilt are works of art. Always amazing. ❤
Ooh those quilts are lovely!! Excellent job!!
Yes you are correct. Here in the U.S. we do love to buy sentimental or hand me down items that keep in the family.
Love your quilts—especially the second one. Love that pattern and think I’ll have to try to find it. Myself, I’m a very slow quilter. If I try to do anything fast, I get stressed. 😂 I got into quilting in 2002 when my aunt invited me to join a quilt class at a local quilt shop. The cost of the class is nominal ($5) but it’s a way for them to get people in to their shop to buy fabric or notions. I continue to go even though I know how to quilt bc it’s a fun way to visit with other quilters and see what they’re making. I’ve been quilting ever since! Occasionally I’m able to make a little extra money making T-shirt quilts and memory quilts for people. They’re very popular here as graduation gifts, retirement gifts, etc. great video! ❤
Your quilts are so beautiful!!!
Jane does your quilt making time include all the cutting out? Reason being I am nearly 80 and have just taken it up after a 10 yr break and take much longer than this. The break was because of helping, plus needs.🪡🧵💐
Oh my gosh, those quilts are absolutely beautiful! You’ve done beautiful work.
Thank you for bringing us along on your little trip. Your country side is beautiful. Your quilts are beautiful. You can see how much better your quilting has gotten over the years. Just beautiful!
