Oingt is officially classified one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. It is very small with charming narrow streets, decorated houses and links to the medieval times. It is an ideal place for wine lovers. Romans introduced the wine culture here and since then it has been a part of local life.
Perched in the southern Beaujolais, 30 minutes from Lyon, Oingt is the only village in the Rhône department to have been awarded the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” label.
It is on the occasion of a walk that the discovery of the village allows to plunge immediately into the history thanks to the lanes with evocative names. A fortress from the Middle Ages, the seigneury of Oingt is said to be the oldest in the region. Until the 19th century, the houses were united by the same ochre limestone rock used for the construction: the golden stone. Oingt, in the heart of the Pierres Dorées villages, is an essential stop on the wine route. More information on the site of the office de tourisme de Oingt.
The village of Oingt, classified as one of the prettiest villages in France, was originally built in Roman times on the old Roman route between Anse and Feurs. Its current form started to take shape around the year 1000 when the Lord Guichard d’Oingt, recently victorious over the Counts of Forez, built a château with a moat and several churches on its edge. Its chapel became a parochial church in 1079. In 1173, Oingt was chosen as a military fortified town for the French region Lyonnais. From the original castle, there remains some vestiges: an eight metres keep or dungeon and the seigneurial dwelling.
The 13th-century Church of St. Matthew was once a seigniorial residence.
The present church is the old castle chapel. It boasts gilded wooden statues and a Gothic choir where the vaults are supported by eight carved columns, which are identified with the family of Lord Guichard IV of Oingt.
