Homemade French fries are a classic comfort food, beloved by people of all ages. Making them from scratch is not only fun but also allows you to create fries that are perfectly crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and bursting with flavor.
To start, choose high-quality potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold, as they have a higher starch content, which gives them that coveted texture. Peel and cut the potatoes into even-sized sticks. If you prefer a thicker fry, aim for ½-inch thick cuts, while a thinner fry can be around ¼-inch thick.
Now, it’s time to bring out the oil. Select an oil with a high smoke point, such as vegetable or canola oil, as this will ensure your fries don’t become greasy. Fill a large, heavy-bottomed pot or a deep fryer with enough oil to submerge the fries completely.
Heat the oil to around 325°F (163°C). This initial lower temperature blanches the fries, cooking them partially and helping to achieve that crispy exterior. Carefully lower a batch of fries into the oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry them for about 5-7 minutes until they are pale golden in color but not yet fully cooked.
Remove the partially cooked fries from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined baking sheet or wire rack to drain any excess oil. Increase the oil temperature to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to heat up.
Once the oil is hot, return the fries to the pot or fryer in small batches. Fry them for an additional 2-3 minutes until they are deep golden brown and perfectly crispy. Keep a close eye on them to avoid overcooking.
Using a slotted spoon or a spider skimmer, carefully remove the fries from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined baking sheet. This step helps absorb any remaining oil and ensures your fries are light and delicious.
While the fries are still hot, season them with salt or any other desired seasonings. Feel free to get creative and experiment with different flavors, like garlic powder, paprika, or even truffle salt for a gourmet touch.
Serve your homemade French fries immediately while they’re at their peak. These crispy delights are perfect on their own
