The first known French toast comes from Rome around the 5th century A.D. The Roman author Apicius included French toast recipes in his cookbook entitled “Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome”. It was the Americans who gave this dish the name “French Toast” because French immigrants in America popularized the dish. In France, it was called “pain perdu” or “lost bread,” which probably referred to the fact the cooks used stale or old bread in this dish. In this video I made simple french toast and used fresh white bread.
