Oh my lord was he worth WAITE-ing for! Had the best time with my new old friend, John Waite. Crazy talented on so many fronts––we talked about many of them… insanely handsome, well, just look for yoself… thoughtful, intelligent, charming and funny as hell… proof of all, contained right here.
Thanks, Sandy Genarro for the post which sparked this invitation. Turns out John and I share a load of mutual friends from New York back in the day, and, who knows, with all the substances consumed maybe we were best friends.
From John’s humble beginnings in the countryside of Lancaster, nattily dressed and tressed even then, making art and music, emulating his cousin, The Beatles influencing everything from sound, to footwear, to hair, art school followed, a couple of job jobs were short-lived, great stories there, and everywhere, here.
The Babys, how and why, the suits, the makeup, the signature drop earring. Wooden Heart, his acoustic trilogy, a taste of Missing You on the fly, thrilling. What he did when the pandemic hit, a little show and tell of his latest art (I want!) and how his fans indirectly got that started again. We circled back to the daze… great stories about Jagger, Townsend, Stevie Wonder, Steve Marriott, New York, the clubs, the drugs, the scene.
What he’s reading and who he’s loving. Making music with Alison Krauss and the Bluegrass scene, joining Ringo Starr and his Allstar band, getting backed up by a Beatle (full circle), going back out on the road, a tour upcoming, maintaining time for those who wait for Waite, his thoughts on Clapton and Van Morrison, a pitch for all to get vaxxed.
I could not have imagined this better. Loved every moment in John’s good company. I look forward to welcoming John in the living room (he said, “yes,”) as soon as the Women Who Write literary salon resumes. We need hugs and pics!
