What really happened with The invention of Coca-Cola as a cure for morphine addiction?
Coca-Cola was invented to treat morphine addiction. During the American Civil War, Confederate Colonel John Pemberton was wounded and became addicted to the drug. With a medical degree, he sought a substitute, creating a nerve tonic in 1885 that he called “Pemberton’s French Wine Coca.” This tonic, inspired by a popular coca wine, also included African kola nuts for caffeine. A year later, when Atlanta passed prohibition laws, Pemberton developed a non-alcoholic version, marketing it as “Coca-Cola: The temperance drink.” This early formula, containing coca leaf extract and kola nuts, offered a non-alcoholic remedy to his morphine dependency.
