Chartreuse really does descend from a Carthusian “elixir of long life”, and only two or three monks are said to know the recipe. Its rival Bénédictine, robed monk on every bottle, was invented in 1863 by a French wine merchant who wrapped it in a tale of a lost monastic recipe. The tale sold magnificently.
