France’s winegrowers are turning to night-time and early-morning harvesting as record summer heat, drought and extreme soil dryness put vineyards under growing pressure. In Lezignan-Corbieres in the Aude region, growers say harvests that once began in early September now start as early as August 12, with mechanical picking sometimes beginning at 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. France recorded its hottest summer since national measurements began in 1900, with average temperatures 3.6°C above normal and 53 heatwave days. The Agriculture Ministry forecasts wine production at 33.9 million hectolitres, 6% below 2025 and 17% below the five-year average.
