Raging wildfires in southwestern France have burned an area four times the size of Paris, while firefighters in Spain report the blazes are too violent to tackle head-on. Infernos continue to spread across both countries as hundreds of thousands of residents flee to escape the flames. Researchers attribute these unbearable conditions to climate change during one of the hottest summers on record in Europe.
Some residents who waited too long to evacuate are now trapped inside their homes as dry and windy conditions complicate firefighting efforts. The crisis includes a Tennessee mother of two who was ordered to shelter in place while thick, black smoke blocks out the skies surrounding her neighborhood. A similar situation unfolds in central Spain, where several residents express feeling forgotten by local authorities.
Temperatures across the region are expected to rise even further in the coming days, worsening the ongoing emergency.
