Demolition crew in Lancaster, Pennsylvania started tearing into a 1923 rooming house last October. First swing of the sledgehammer sent a bottle of Château Margaux rolling across the floor. Then another. Then forty more. The original builder, a French immigrant named Clément Deschênes, had insulated the walls with 312 wine bottles packed in straw. Most were empty, used for thermal mass. But seventy-one still had corks. A sommelier from Philadelphia identified fourteen bottles worth over six thousand dollars each. The foreman called the property owner. “We need to stop breaking your building. Your walls are worth more than the lot.” They dismantled the rest by hand.
