Long time lurker, first time contributor. Wife had a milestone birthday this year so purchased several 1986s over the past year for her July celebration. We’ve now opened both the Montelena and the Caymus over the past week and both were in great shape! I am awful at tasting notes (she’s better) but as a novice, the Montelena had lots of leather, maybe tobacco? The Caymus was great and nothing like the current Caymus that exists😂 with lots of cherry and a hint of licorice?
Both corks were in great shape, fully intact but definitely some sediment. I have two more bottles of of the ‘86 Montelena and we will try the Silverado sometime soon.
Appreciate this subreddit for the confidence on aged wines with provenance!

Silverado always a little underrated. Disney money and Stags Leap property. The style of the 1980s is very different from today. Lower alcohol, more acidity in general. Enjoy!
Montelena from that era is always a treat, glad it held up for you
how the caymus compare to modern ones? i heard the style changed a lot in the 90s already
