Prieuré Roch, difficult to find elsewhere in the world, seems abundantly available in bistros, caves and restaurants in Paris.

Asked for a bottle of their 2019 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots but only 2021 is available – why not?

Upon opening no surprise – barnyard and leather with tight tannins and medium plus acidity; otherwise still shy. 20 minutes in the glass it opened a bit and welcomed us with delicious red fruits and strawberries. Quite some spices in the finish as well. It did go quite well with our concise dinner before I had to rush back to my place for errands… and save a half bottle of it for later this evening and tomorrow.

Two more pours after 3 hours – the delicate violet note finally showed up and it was lovely! However, it would be covered by the same barnyard note when I swirled the wine glass. After half an hour in the glass, the acidity rocketed and subtlety was nowhere to find.

Would I ever pay the market price for it? No. Do I prefer this over other producers in VR, let say Cecile Tremblay or Sylvain Cathiard? Def no!

Still a joy to drink especially in a record breaking sizzling hot week in Paris. Stay cool and cheers!

I had 3 diff PR bottlings when I was in France; I had 1 good bottle out of the 3. First one was a little mousey, second one had crazy high VA.
