A remarkable collection of rare late-19th-century wines hidden at the end of World War II has been restored and unveiled to the public in the Czech Republic.

The cache of 133 bottles, most dating from 1892 to 1899, was concealed beneath a chapel floor at Becov Castle by the aristocratic Beaufort-Spontin family as the war drew to a close. The collection remained hidden for decades until its dramatic discovery in 1985 alongside the famous Reliquary of Saint Maurus.

Experts from the renowned French winery Château d’Yquem recently completed a meticulous restoration process, replacing corks while preserving the bottles’ original appearance—including the dust accumulated during decades underground.

According to Château d’Yquem’s cellar master, the underground chapel’s cool temperatures, humidity and thick stone walls created ideal storage conditions, helping preserve the wine for more than a century.

The collection is now on public display, offering visitors a rare glimpse into a wartime secret, a lost aristocratic treasure, and one of Europe’s most extraordinary wine discoveries.

  1. They will degrade the wine with the new short corks. The old corks allowed for the smallest possible air gap between the wine and cork, just enough air so that the two don't touch when standing upright.
