I consider myself to be quite experienced in drinking wine, but after a long time I am currently able to age a few bottles(I am starting with 50).

I read a lot about how to properly age red wine, It happens that I have a really good basement(under the house), with no light in it, the humidity is alright and temperature is around 12 degrees Celsius(without amplitudes). All bottles I store there can be aged(some for a few years, others for more).

My only concern is: The bottle positioning. I understand the cork needs to be in contact with the wine all the time. My bottles are currently stored as shown in the picture. Horizontally(on the side). Bottles are touching each other(and I believe there is no movement at all, no vibrations).

Is this position good for ageing the wine bottles? Should I have some space between the bottles? Am I doing it right or completely wrong? Please help me as I am really anxious if those bottles can stay in this position for 2 to 10 years without going faulty. I would really appreciate any insights on the topic!

Also for anyone interested – I will be storing mostly high-end bottles from my own Country(Bulgaria) – some are well known blends and grapes such as Cab – Merlot – Pti Verdot – Syrah , while others are local grapes such as Mavroud or Rubin. Some of the bottles have golden medal from Decanter, while others have 95 , 96 and 98 points from Master of Wine experts. I can post some information about bulgarian wine if anyone is intrested

The only thing wrong with this is what looks like sunlight touching the bottles…is this flash from the photo?

if the humidity is decent, then no.

didn’t know bulgaria had high end wines.

If you want to have more bottles, you could/should either invest in wine racks or build yourself a wine racks.

fect to me – bottles touching each other is fine and actually helps with temperature stability 👌 just make sure you can still access them without disturbing the others too much when you need to grab one 🍷

I think you’re going to be good to go after adding additional storage

I keep about 200-250 bottles in my basement which fluctuates between 64-66*F, dating back to 2013. I haven’t experienced any degradation issues
