Got it as a present from my boss and now was the time to give it a shot.

What should i say, chateau rieussec is known as the second best producer of sauternes, if not on the same level of d‘yquem if you go for price/quality.

2004 was not the best year in sauternes but still a good year.

On the Nose we got primarily dried dates, dried apricot, and some crème brulée.

Its rich, has a very well balanced acidity/sugar level and has a lot of pineapple and dates, orange peel on the palate. And it has a looong finish.

Wow, very different to the austrian sweet wines i usually drink but did absloutely deliver.

Nice bottle, your boss has good taste. The 2004 wasn’t the strongest vintage for Sauternes but Rieussec still pulls through with quality even in off years. I’ve had a few Austrian dessert wines and they tend to be much more delicate and mineral-driven compared to the power and richness you get from Bordeaux dessert wines. The way you describe those tropical and dried fruit notes really captures what makes French Sauternes special – they just have this incredible depth and concentration that develops over time. Those long finishes on aged Sauternes are something else, almost feels like the wine keeps evolving in your mouth for minutes after you swallow
