My wife and I had friends to dinner on Friday for Coq au Vin. We opened a few bottles with a little age on them, the best of which were these two.

The Alturas, a favorite, was our last bottle from when Paul and Jackie Gordon were at the helm. It was at the perfect point for consumption—highly aromatic with notes of dark, tart berry and smoked meat and light herbs. On the palate, medium+ body and fine, firm tannins in perfect harmony with juicy acidity. There’s a noticeable, wonderful, Rhône-like resinous streak that has developed with age.

The Navarro paired beautifully with lemon cheesecake, redolent of honeysuckle/jasmine, unctuous mouthfeel, gobs of apricot and marmalade, but with enough acidity to keep it legit.
