I run a tiny cafe/bakery hybrid, and this came up again yesterday when my line cook joked that our current fridge “wheezes like a 90-year-old smoker.” He’s not wrong.
We’re at the point where I either grab another used unit from a local dealer or finally pony up for a legit new commercial fridge / merchandiser setup. I’ve been pricing out reach-in freezers and those glass-door merch fridges for drinks and grab-and-go stuff, and the sticker shock is real, even with “sale” prices and free shipping offers. Saw a site flexing UL/ETL, quick shipping, etc. and it all *sounds* nice, but maybe I’m overthinking this.
For those of you who’ve actually upgraded to newer display fridges/freezers in the last year or two: did it pay off in reliability, energy bills, and less food waste? Any brands you’d avoid like the plague? And is a flashy merch fridge up front actually moving more product for you, or just looking pretty and eating power?
