As part of my travels around Bordeaux tasting the 2025 vintage en-primeur wines I visited the lovely Chateau Coutet in Saint Emilion – the estate should not be confused with the Sauternes property of the same name. The Estate has a wonderful history of 400 years of ownership by the David Beaulieu family. Part of the estate’s rich heritage is this fantastic old basket press – well over 100 years old the press has been converted from a hand-cranked press by the addition of an electric motor. It’s gentle hydraulic action helps give the wines from the estate rich, soft, supple tannins that can’t be matched by modern presses. It’s an amazing old piece of kit!
