lead in: the Portuguese prime minister, Mario Soares, had talks at the Elysee palace in Paris on Monday (mar 7) with president Valery Giscard d’estaing on Portugal’s bid to become a member of the European economic community—the common market.
Dr Soares, who lived in Paris while an exile from his homeland, said he found a “sympathetic under-standing” for Portugal’s problems in his talks with president Giscard and the french premier, Raymond Barre.
however, french officials remained cautious about Portugal’s hopes of joining the economic community in the near future.

commentary: Dr Soares is touring eec capitals in an effort to win support for his country’s application to join the community, a move he sees as of vital importance to the future of economic stability and also of democracy in Portugal.
speaking to reporters, Dr Soares said he was confident that the french leaders would fully understand and appreciate his country’s problems.
however, correspondents say that France is expected to be one of the eec countries which will oppose a speedy Portuguese entry to the eec, because of the french wine and vegetable producers who do not want a big influx of cheaper produce coming into the market.
Portugal is expected to make its formal application for eec membership in Brussels later this month.
