I’m buying an apartment and need help defining a clear direction for materials and colors
Constraints:
- Light-colored tile floors (a bit dated)
- Dark wood (walnut) windows + shutters → keeping these
What I will change:
- Walls
- Interior doors + baseboards (they are ruined)
- Furniture (the owner will leave the room empty)
Goal:
Make it feel as modern as possible while staying coherent with the existing elements (especially the walnut windows).
My idea:
I’m leaning toward white doors + white walls + white baseboards (simple, clean, budget-friendly), but I’m worried about an “all white / hospital” look since the floor is already very light.
Maybe this can be balanced with:
- warmer wall color
- wood / black furniture
- warm lighting
Questions
- Should I try to match the walnut tone elsewhere, or treat it as a standalone element?
- Do white doors clash with dark wood windows?
- How do I avoid a flat/boring look with such a light base?
Looking for a modern but not cold/minimal result.

To prevent a hospital feel you’re going to have to avoid white. Paint the walls a warmer color 100% but don’t paint anything white except the doors. Also adding large jewel colored rugs will help prevent a cold/minimal result. My rule of thumb is lighter the walls the darker the decor. Warm walls don’t necessarily mean dark because you could paint the living room artichoke and black furniture would still make it feel cozy. The walnut windowsill can be left alone as its own design piece.
