Today, Bordeaux-trained winemaker Julien Miquel introduces Château Giscours, a “Third Growth” estate from the prestigious Margaux appellation. Despite its official 1855 classification, Miquel argues that Giscours is one of the world’s best value propositions in fine wine, often outperforming “Second Growth” estates while retailing for a relatively accessible $70–$110.

____________
The Estate and Terroir
Château Giscours spans 100 hectares of high-elevation gravel plateau. This specific terroir provides the natural drainage and heat retention necessary to push Cabernet Sauvignon to peak ripeness. Miquel attributes the estate’s recent rise in quality and critical acclaim (often scoring 95+ points) to the management of Alexander van Beek, who has refined the wine’s structural complexity over the last two decades.
Tasting Notes: 2020 Vintage
Miquel highlights several defining characteristics of the 2020 vintage:
Appearance: A vibrant, deep red that remains remarkably youthful after six years, showing no signs of browning or oxidation.
Aroma: An “ocean of dark chocolate” layered with coffee, caramel, and fine toasted oak. These savory notes are balanced by fresh dark berries, strawberry jelly, and an array of spices like cinnamon and nutmeg.
Palate: The wine is defined by its “fine-grained” tannins. While dense and concentrated, the texture is silky and velvety rather than harsh. Miquel describes it as “an iron fist in a velvet glove”—a classic Margaux trait where power meets extreme refinement.
Longevity and Value
The core of the wine’s appeal is its ability to age. Miquel notes that the 2020 vintage will continue to improve for at least 15 to 20 years. For collectors and enthusiasts, Giscours represents a rare opportunity to secure a high-scoring, age-worthy Bordeaux that offers the finesse of much more expensive neighbors like Château Margaux. It is a quintessential example of how a historic estate can leverage modern management and superior terroir to deliver elite quality at a fair price point.
