Vineyard frost management is the set of techniques used by grape growers to protect vines from damaging cold temperatures, especially in early spring when young buds are highly vulnerable.
It includes both preventative strategies like site selection, pruning timing, and air drainage, as well as active interventions such as wind machines, heaters (smudge pots), water spraying, and even helicopters to circulate warmer air.
The goal is simple: keep vineyard temperatures just above freezing during critical moments, preserving the crop and ensuring a viable harvest.
