We moved in about 6 months ago and I have no idea what they’re called. We are going to have our walls painted one color and I’m considering removing them entirely, but looking for before we make changes.

Board and batten wainscoting is what they were going for. I think painting it will make it look less clumsily done than their high contrast recesses – when you prep I’d sand the sharp edges to round them just a touch and be sure that the inside edges are caulked so that any that are sticking slightly proud of the recessed surface are sealed.

Many wainscotings like this are done in the trim color so you could do that, or do wall and wainscoting in the same color but in semi-gloss trim paint with the walls above it in flat or satin wall paint.

It is wainscotting but done in a little bit of a strange way. I’d paint the entire lower part your trim color and the upper wall in your chosen wall color. Do a search on wainscotting and you’ll see so many ways to go with it. I bet you won’t see something painted in that way though, with the dark parts.

Unless you are in a older home that fits this style I would use a single color on the walls and separating trim. My husband was not happy when I chose to do this in our living room recently, but agrees now it was the right thing to do. Some may suggest removing the trim, but we didn’t. I like the look.

Sorry, no. You can absolutely do whatever you want to your home. I am just commenting based upon a lot of research I did before I decided what to do. The general recommendations I read for the most part indicated that unless your home is older to where that feature has some historic value, it is often more desirable to paint it all the same color. I would follow what someone else suggested an upload an image to ChatGPT and mock it up both ways. I had originally thought I would paint the entire wall one color, but leave the trim white, but when I saw it mocked up I didn’t like it.
