We’re staying at the boutique Hotel Grano de Oro in San José, Costa Rica. Housed in a restored Victorian mansion, the hotel is an oasis of calm in the bustling capital. And the hotel restaurant offers excellent food in a stylish setting.
Hotel Grano de Oro is located on a quiet side street near Paseo Colón. Guests arriving by rental car can park for free in a fenced parking lot next door. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the center of San José. This meticulously restored early 20th-century Victorian mansion has been a hotel since 1991. “Grano de Oro” means “grain of gold”, a nod to the coffee bean, which once formed the economic backbone of Costa Rica. Today, the hotel combines historical charm with the luxury of a modern boutique hotel.
The 40 rooms and suites are furnished with dark woods in a tropical Victorian style and are all unique; no two rooms are alike. Our room has a comfortable bed, a very spacious bathroom, and a romantic patio with lots of greenery and a gently bubbling fountain. Even in the hotel’s common areas, we keep coming across charming courtyards with tropical plants. There’s a rooftop terrace with jacuzzis and a fitness center.
The hotel restaurant is considered one of the best in the capital. It serves French Mediterranean cuisine with tropical influences. You can dine either outdoors in the elegant courtyard or inside in the stylish ambiance. Both our dinner and the à la carte breakfast were excellent.
That was our last night in Costa Rica! We take a walking tour through downtown San José (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEe_Qli16Ds&t=27s). Then it’s off to the airport and back home.
What we liked:
– Excellent and quiet location; you can easily walk to downtown San José, and the international airport is only about 20 km (12 mi) away.
– Beautiful ambiance.
– The food was excellent.
What we liked less:
– Our patio was very romantic, but since it was the only window, the room felt a bit dark.
Our conclusion:
A comfortable starting or ending point for a Costa Rica trip.
