We are trying to redesign our kitchen for an update. The island currently exists with soapstone countertop, which we really love soapstone because it’s impossible to stain and we can set hot pans on it and it doesn’t require maintenance.

So everything you see here currently exists today. But the image has been altered with AI to reflect our goals:

• Lighten the existing solid cherry cabinets from their deep, almost orange to this softer natural wood (clear stain)

• Change the countertops from a grey marble to nearly white quartz

• The island today is basic white paint. It’s maple wood, different from the cabinets. Since we need to keep the countertop, our option is to paint the island.

I am trying so many options for accent island, and they all look weird. Can’t figure out if it’s a design problem or AI just rendering things weird.

It’s the contrast between the black top and the white everything else. It looks out of place.

I feel like it looks off because the island isnt rhe same colour as the cabinets.

Can you make the countertop match the rest? I think that’s it! Love the natural wood of your cabinets.

  4. I think it would work if you painted the island a warmer white that matches the outer cabinet countertop. That would help tie everything together.

I think you need to paint it the same color as your walls to tie it into the rest of the kitchen

Maybe the different countertop is accenting enough, and the cabinet should stay matched with the rest.

The kitchen looks too crowded for the island. Do you have the clearance you need?

  8. I would remove the island. If you keep it, the top piece should match countertop.

Changing wall and floor would help. Can you post a non-ai picture of what it currently looks like?

  10. Since when does soapstone not require maintenance?? Literally why we didn’t get it.

Anywho, what about a dark green?

I’d try a creamy white or taupe. The colors are too jarring. You don’t need a bold contrast.

You’re trying to blend cool toned paint colors with an already warm toned environment. The two clash. Maybe try looking for a vintage oak or pine island that has some character and would blend with the cabinets and warmth of the room.

Restain the maple island a dark contrasting wood tone. Mixing wood tones is fine and will look more like furniture. If you use water based stain with more pigment in it, it will even out the maple, and you can use toners to get it like you want it before topcoating.

The whole island shouldn’t be an accent, just the countertop. Stain all the wood the same. You’re trying to do too much in a small space. I agree with others that the space doesn’t lend itself to this island but since your choosing function (which is 100% the right choice), you’re going to have a slightly off-putting aesthetic no matter what you do with it. Don’t try to draw more attention to it, it makes it look like an eye sore and not an accent.

Could you make the top wood instead? Or at least a similar colour to the rest of the counters? Something to bring it in line with at least the rest of the cupboards and countertops.

The paint colors on the island are all cool toned whereas the wood on the cabinets is warm toned. Try something warm and then see how you feel.

I think it’s the fact that a kitchen island is a weird thing to use as an accent and so our brains read it like it’s the island from a totally different kitchen

The color choices of the island cabinet doesn’t pick up any color already in the room. The white countertops aren’t truly as white as the suggested option and the grey floor is much lighter than the suggested dark gray option. Perhaps the same gray as the walls would work.

I have granite countertops. I would never place hot pans on it, just in case. I have silicone trivets and thick placemats for hot pots and pans.

Well I actually don’t understand the idea of putting an island in the middle of the kitchen at all, sorry I’m from Europe
