Context is so important, and a lot of what I make videos on require context of past videos. I assume too much knowledge very often from the audience, and it can cause confusion and frustration.
This video is to give the viewer a better framework by which to watch my videos going forward, empowering them to forget rules and embrace guidelines.

This video covers something I’ve been thinking about, not only about you but other coffee YouTubers. A large component to y’all’s influence is your status as a taste makers in general. I.e. not only the techniques used but what the end product tastes like as well. Thus far on your channel, all of your experiments and techniques have one end goal: what does Lance’s ideal cup of coffee taste like and how do I get there. However, this experimentation has also uniquely positioned you to assist people in figuring out recipes that appeal to their own palate. A brew recipe you dislike might be one that I would love, who knows? This is all to say that my feedback to you, if you’re looking for feedback, is try to describe “failed” experiments in ways that don’t disparage the end result but illuminate to us what makes it unique, and when you brew something that you like, remind us that just because you like it doesn’t mean that we will. Thanks!
Oh no, you're learning and improving, how dare you.
Amazing, Lance. Thank you for being an example of what public figures should be thinking and talking about. What you're speaking on expands beyond coffee to life in general; we seem to be moving more towards black and white thinking in the west. Thank you for being part of the change
TY
Listen coffee man, spare me the political nonsense and just tell me what to think!
Lance, we are not retarded, we know you are just a human. Keep making amazing videos 🙂
You and the Hoff have changed my coffee experience for the better. I'll always be grateful for your advice and videos
Great video Lance. In the Hifi world "reviewers" have been around for decades writing the gospel of HIFI in print magazines. Youtube reviewes have very much broken that down to a degree. Maybe a new problem emerges though. Its more understood now that the world is a charcuterie board with many flavors. Coffee is of course the same way. There is a relationship between consumerism and science i suppoe that happens in a capatalistic society. But unfortunately the nature of the internet does make fast fashion out of just about anything or any hobby niche product cat. Etc. That is probably the more dark aspect about what you are talking about. There is an overarching result here or messaging and thet is to voice discontent to never be happy.
In large part humans are not happy because they have to live without while others live with.
There was a point when we were all content with a $20 mr coffee. I myself run an audio youtube channel and ask many of these questions.
Having better this or that doesn't equate to an easier or gapier life. In almost everywhere luxury or best sinoly means maintenance and will suck more of your time and soul. We dont always think aboit these things. The older you get the more you realize simple is better.
I spent 5 years obsessing about coffee have been running a flair 58 and a niche. Could not be happier. I know i could spend more but there is no point. My goal was to have great coffee on the regular. To make great espresso mundane. It only become mundane when you stop obsessing about it. When you wake up make cofee and are not even giving a shit. Much of what the mind does is try and avoid our other thoughts and obsessing over things in genral is not good. It really is about the experience and when we measure that and that alone we might just find our way back to a mr coffee maker. Happiness is found in the harmony. Im not looking to disaasemble an engine for some bean juice but some people are i suppose. Have fun but don't subsitute life for spro and other hobbies. Still many will watch yours and others content and believe it to be the gospel. IDK maybe society does need God.
In many ways ones obsession for perfect espresso is an strempt to thwart an imperfect day. Life doesnt work that way. Sometimes we have to have a bad cup of coffee to truly appreciate a good cup of coffee. And that is where i am at in my personal journey.
Crazy that someone would have to even make a video like this… it’s cool he did, and helpful also. Also, that he would be driven to explain himself possibly due to the amount of criticism out there.. crazy.
Dude, just make coffee and be weird. That’s why we love you. You worry way too much about influence and bias and what people say in the comments. No matter how much you self flagellate and spend time in postmodern existential hand wringing, it isn’t going to fix “people on the internet” misunderstanding, oversimplifying, and being self righteous.
The best coffee is the one you enjoy
To add another perspective- You have to feed the algorithm. Strong opinions and provocative thumbnails help. That is why I always try things that are advices eg by you and James if they work for me. Some do, some do not. But I learned a lot and my cup improved mightily! So keep posting, Lance and thank you for the travel advice!
One thing I’m sure, you will never push me away from morning espresso 😀
The first thing that comes to mind in this video is "What can the Hoffmann Cometh channel do with this?"
Am I wrong?
Everything you say has to be endgame thats why I watch!
Thanks for propagating an academic mindset as an influencer!
Oh my god I just pull a shot. You are so full of yourself
I just needed a settled workflow. I don't mind to use NDT (for example) even if I don't have to. Even then it's a good habit. So thank you for your insights, they helped me (and a lot of other people I guess) to understand what I'm doing and why, and to be able to enjoy my coffee 🙂
He thinks he’s talking about coffee but he’s really talking about life
OK Lance this is what I want from you my friend follow your coffee heart! Listen to your own taste buds and have a good foundation happy new year, brother!!! ☕️😁👍👍👍
I feel reason why so many people end up subconsciously taking your word as doctrine shows how the trust they have in you as a person and the reputation you built up
There is also another "issue". You have a very specific preference towards some taste profile. It would be good to have random people to test what they prefer to get something more realistic
I dont get people that take it all too seriously… you are just a geeky coffee guy that shares whatever YOU are thinking and experiencing! why put so much on the scale and make a fuz about it? just brew coffee and enjoy it!
Lance, thank you so much for testing, experiencing and tasting! you are doing a wonderful job!
The evolution in your approach and explored aspects of coffee through time is in my opinion the reason why your channel is so great ! Every new video it seems like you are sharing something new and sharing it so we can go on this learning journey together. It doesn’t feel like an academic course but more like a journey. Great video for pointing that out ! ⭐️
Love it, facts facts!
Bought the Gaggia classic with the new brass boiler. Great machine. I was planning on upgrades but used the machine for a while stock equipped. Great machine as is. I will not do any upgrades. People don’t get sucked into all the fancy gizmos and upgrades. Learn to use a machine and create art by observation rather than all the fancy gizmos.
Bravo make coffee. Enjoy it. Keep learning. Thx Lance.
Guys, even if there's a certain 'science' to it, Coffee is not 'rocket science'. I'm 50 years old and have worked with coffee for the most part of these decades. I've seen the old-school turning into the new school and the rise of 'specialty coffee' and I have one thing to say – you don't need any of these special gadgets that were never needed and no one cared about until 5mins ago, you don't need to spend thousands of dollars/euros/pounds on equipment, you need some level of quality yes but there's 3 things to mind: 1- Understand coffee and what really is crucial to make a good cup of coffee; shop smart; 3- Enjoy it. If you don't enjoy the cup you're making, revisit points 1 & 2, that's it!
Hope you brew something tasty today. Good advice. ❤
This is a random suggestion and unlikely you'll see it given how late the comment is, but have you considered an at home and lab score? adding a subjective score/take could be a nice addition to add nuance.
Great clarity in that video 😉
Thank you for posting this Lance. I have always taken your videos as guidance instead of dogma. This video does not come across as backtracking anything, but as a reminder of what it is, guidance. You should probably start your videos with the last phrase of this one and make it part of your brand 😉
Every scientist:
It used to be XYZ and now it's CYX. We've learned.
Them: "Well you said XYZ and now you're saying CYX so I'm never gonna believe anything you tell me again!"
That was a waste of 10 minutes
Yep ❤
I completely abandoned home espresso after almost diving too deep into all the minutiae, partially fueled by content on YouTube!
I realised everything is relative, and James Hoffmann's video really put everything into perspective for me: if I like how it tastes, clearly I'm doing a fine job!
