This might be the best blind tasting lineup we’ve ever had. Different Drop sent us six wines from wine making legends around the world, and we ended up buying a dozen of almost every single wine.
Usually in these tastings, I’m hunting for something to give a dozen to. This time? I was hunting for something I didn’t want a dozen of. Out of six wines, the scores were: dozen, dozen, dozen, dozen, dozen, six. That’s how good this lineup was.
What we tasted:
Six wines from legendary producers across the globe—sparkling, whites, orange, and reds. From $49 to $165.
The South African Redemption:
Yes, this was blind. No, we didn’t know it was South African when we called it our wine of the lineup. The best Cinsault I’ve ever had—it tastes like really good French Pinot, great Australian Grenache, or as it turns out, incredible South African Cinsault. Sometimes you need to be proven wrong, and we’re here for it.
The Verdict:
When wine-making legends live up to their names, you buy the wine. Simple as that.
Drop a comment: Have you had any of these wines? And what’s your favorite international wine region?
🍷 Like, subscribe, and thanks to Different Drop for this legendary lineup!

Yes, works out to AUD 49 in South Africa. The range is always great value on release. Just odd it's so darn expensive your side relative to other South African wines retailed at DD that are far more expensive this side..
Might wanna change the graphics for wine 4 lol it’s still the sc pannell
I love a good Cinsault which is really hard to find. It is a bright happy red grape brimming with red cherries and not much else. No real tannins no real bottom end, so it is usually used in a blend. I'm happy for South Africa as I have had so many wines from them that are more or less bretty. I should mention that I despise brett and see it as a winemaking flaw. I am willing to concede that a little note of it can add to the complexity of the wine. The rest of the wines were epic, I just wanted to comment on the Cinsault.
I've always had great luck with SAF Cinsault, especially from Natte Valleij. And there is a growing trend today of really warmer climate Cab Francs with a fleshier core which are fab. Some top stuff I've tried recently was from the Okanagan, Barossa, Chianti (Bibi Graetz) and funny enough – Gaja from the Bolgheri estate which I tried earlier today.
I think you pronounce the o in Pofadder like the o in lock, and the a like in attention. So P-oh-ff-Ah-dd-er. Idk if this was helpful, im Dutch which is still not the same as Afrikans lol
For fizzy wine you guys really should refill for each taster. So often one of the guys ends up misreviewing a flat wine.
Looking forward to looking for legends on the wine list this weekend at Noble Rot. Sorry you won't there with us Henry! What would you order? 😊
Ahh guys love the content! Always interesting chat🇿🇦
It’s pronounced po(r)ff-udder. Named after the puff adder snakes no doubt found on the Kasteelberg mountain where the vineyard is located, near the picturesque town of Riebeeck-Kasteel. I got married there!
That Tiers 1.5 was $45 a couple years ago. Was buying it for about $35 through work. Amazing stuff!
One of the best Cinsault I have had! Still have some in the cellar. Scions of Sinai, Rall, and Savage also have some lovely ones from SA.
Interesting about your cab. franc, in California because of the ripeness it is often hard to tell cab. franc from cab. sauvignon also.
Love your work guys. I have passed the hat around at my local footy club here in Germany. Cheque is in the mail. Bitte, buy yourselves some more glasses. Watching each of youS taste each wine from the same glass almost puts me off my Schnitzel. Apart from that, gute Arbeit Jungs!
2023 SP68 Bianco shouldn't be that orange; I've tried the same vintage a few times already, and it has been all white and lean and fresh, as it's always been. Not even a tinge of orange.
Unless they sent the orange version to Australia, since you're more open to them than us here in the Nordics… 😂
Also, I definitely hope "poof adder" is the correct pronunciation. 🫣
You guys should do a Lambrusco and sparkling Shiraz tasting
So happy for SA! Have to agree they have been making some fab cinsaut recently. Top value is Follow the line by Savage.
