Eh my problem with the french press is that it never seems to strain everything to my satisfaction. I ended up using it to brew in than straining it through a chemex.
NEVER press the plunger on the French Press. Follow all steps in the vid., but don't press the plunger. Instead, leave it at the top as a filter. This gives a much cleaner, tastier cup. Pressing the plunger causes the fines, & smaller pieces of ground coffee seed to bypass the screen filter. This is due to pipe fluid dynamics. Just leave the plunger at the top.
1:15 is what I use for pourover. For French Press, I find 1:10 is a good starting point. If that's too intense, diluting slightly with a little hot water is fine. So is just brewing at a 1:11 or even 1:14 ratio. Brew time should be eight to ten minutes. This allows time for the grounds to settle, which will be better than trying to scrape the foam off (which could agitate the grounds.) Pour very gently. Use a cloth filter for a cleaner cup, or pour into a decanter and pour very gently from the decanter. The batch should be large but you'll want to drink it from a small cup. I don't use my French press often because I do not consider it a single serve brewer; I consider it a batch brewer. Great for filling a thermos or sharing coffee with a lot of friends. For just a cup or two. . . yeah, maybe Turkish coffee or using a Vietnamese filter or something would be better.
I really like this method- quick and not too fussy. I use a FP everyday, even during the workweek. I do have a Keurig but that’s only for emergencies when I need a cup quick- which is rare, mercifully. ☕️ ❤
I have five different types of coffee makers but the French press has its place. It makes a smooth cup of coffee and if you have a few minutes it is a relaxing way to make coffee. It also lends itself very well to camping. I have made espresso while camping but it takes a bit more doing whereas the French press is a very relaxed way to sit, heat your water and then pour it into the French press and wait quietly wow enjoying nature.
"Actually possible to get really great coffee." Well yeah its a fuck8ng coffee maker….i feel like you just had ai write your script cause logically it doesnt make sence. People like french presses. They make good coffee, like most coffee makers😂
I miss using a french press, but trying to get rid of the grounds because you cant get all the water out of them and you cant just dump them in a garden is hard
No hate obviously, but I have never heard anyone who likes coffe hate the French Press, well exept my mom, she likes coffee piping hot, fresh from a boil cause she's used to instant coffee, so the coffee I make her from the Press having a brewtime of 4 to 10 minutes (depending on yourbpreffered method) is far yoo "cold" for her
Immersion brewing is still my favorite technique after 25 years. French press is still my preference for daily driver coffee. We are lucky to have many different immersion brewers now and they are all good for different things but there is a texture and a mouthfeel that the french press achieves that is sorely missing from other immersion methods.
Personally, 5 min brew time, plunge, 7 min rest time, pour verrrry gently and do not pour all the way to the grounds, should still be liquid left in the press. This will give great texture with minimal grit in the cup.
Nothing wrong with the taste, it’s cleaning the thing and disposing of the grinds that I’ve never been a fan of. I prefer the Hario Switch, comparable taste, easier use of function
geniuine question, is there really any way to get rid of the sludge at the bottom of the cup? am I pouring too fast or not letting the grounds settle enough? I've tried this method, hoffman's method, but there always seems to be sludge at the bottom 🙁
I don’t bother scooping the foam off the top. The foam is the good part and I enjoy it in my coffee. I also don’t worry about grinds getting in my cup bc that’s what the filter is there for. Plus if some do end up in my cup it isn’t the end of the world.
French press method is one of my favorite and imo easiest ways to make coffee. It really isn’t that hard to clean either. Just dump the grounds in garbage or sink and rinse off the filter… and boom you’re done!
The fun part about coffee is 5 other ass hats will tell you to do it differently. Dont believe me watch this then go see what Hoffman says. This and the gun community probably good few others

Keruig is the ultimate French press
I like French press however I prefer to have a brew time for 5 minutes. In such case coffe is sweet.
Thanks for the video. I'm curious about that mug. Who makes it?
I use my french press a lot i dont recommend plunging it down cuz it agitatest the coffee grounds n u get that muck at the end
I love using the French press because it’s Dale Cooper’s favourite method to make coffee.
Like a cupping
Try not pushing down, it just agitated the coffee bed that has settled at the bottom

I love French Press, I hate cleaning it
Can we use spoons and cup measurements please!

I think it just depends on the quality of french press!
I use a 1:14 for black coffee and 1:3 for a latte
What the heck is that press, with a gasket and all that

Please keep it all imperial

Outside of espresso, French press is by far my favorite. The best non-espresso coffee I’ve ever had was a French press. I don’t get the hate.
1g Coffee = 15g Water? thats new for me
yea it's a great tool but washing it is a not good experience

I love my French Press… I use it most days… I'll always keep it in my coffee brewing rotation 😊💙
If you hate the French press, you have issues.

Will it still be hot
Sounds like a pain in the ass.
If I could find a way to keep a paper filter intact in my French press I would love it.
That's an awfully hot coffee pot
taking the foam off ? you are reducing the natural caffeine !
I'm from France, and oui, this is how we make le coffe
Doesn’t French press coffee have more cholesterol raising effects than filtered coffee? Especially for people who drink more than a couple of cups.
I love my French press.

hmm interesting, I never preheated the french press, always pouring water on a cold one. Will try this
I’ve only ever use a French press … even travel with it
Nah once you go Aero there's no going back. It's just easier and smoother and cleanup is almost nothing.
My French press is collecting dust 😂
Don't get me wrong it's an art but it's too much hassle.
Solomoning my Nelson, thank you Greg!
