Wine labels can feel like they’re written in code – especially when you’re staring at 200 bottles in a shop. Today we’re breaking down exactly what’s on wine labels and what it all means, so you can shop with confidence.

We decode three different bottles:

🍷 New World (Australian) – The straightforward approach
🍷 Old World (French) – Where required knowledge kicks in
🍷 German – The final boss of wine labels

What you’ll learn:
The 3 things EVERY wine label must tell you
Why Old World wines don’t list the grape variety
What all those French terms actually mean
How to navigate German wine classifications (yes, it’s as complex as you’ve heard)
The difference between New World and Old World labeling
What “Contains Sulfites” really means
How to decode sweetness levels
Why some wines list vineyards and others don’t

By the end, you’ll understand what Appellation Contrôlée means, why German wines have SO many words on them, and most importantly – how to find wines you’ll actually enjoy.

No more anxiety in the wine aisle. No more grabbing random bottles and hoping for the best. Just clear, practical knowledge you can use immediately. Perfect for beginners who want to understand what they’re buying, or anyone who’s been pretending to understand wine labels for years (we see you).

  1. Thanks for the explanations.
I was interested that you put the UK in the Old World. Wine has been made in some New World countries for much longer. Perhaps the English have adopted an Old World classification system? And Spain was in both the Old and New Worlds?

  2. The UK is considered Old World simply because it’s part of Europe. And yes, there was already viticulture in England back in the Middle Ages – long before the New World was even discovered. What we see today with English sparkling wines is more of a revival than something entirely new. 🍇

  3. Mate, as a German, those labels are crystal clear to me – from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, no worries.
You’re spot on: generally, the higher up you go, the sweeter it gets. But it’s not set in stone. Spätlese, for example, just means the grapes were picked later – doesn’t mean the wine’s sweet. Some are actually bone dry, just depends how the winemaker handles fermentation.
