Exploring Jonzac feels like stepping into a living tapestry—its covered Baltard-style market halls from the 19th century brim with seasonal produce, cheeses, charcuterie, wines, and local treasures, creating a feast for the senses every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday morning. And when summer rolls in, the Wednesday night markets transform into a festive open-air gathering—complete with food stalls, live music, and local artisans under the stars.
Dominating the skyline, the Château de Jonzac perches majestically on a rocky spur overlooking the Seugne valley. Originally rebuilt around 1449 after the ravages of the Hundred Years’ War, it evolved beautifully over centuries—later housing the town hall and sub-prefecture from the 19th century onward. Inside, richly preserved rooms like the council chamber and theatre echo with the legacy of historical figures, from Louis XIV to Mazarin.
Beyond the halls, Jonzac celebrates its regional bounty through “Les Délices de Saintonge”, a producer’s shop where over sixty local artisans bring fresh fruit, condiments, breads, cheeses, meats, and wines—perfect for savoring or gifting. And on Saturday mornings, don’t miss the gourmet artisanal markets with live music and even bouquinistes (book vendors) adding charm and community spirit.
Jonzac isn’t just about heritage—it’s also about wellness. Nestled in troglodyte quarries is the modern thermal spa, born from a 1979 geothermal drilling that revealed sulfur-rich, mineral-laden water at 62 °C. Today, it draws thousands annually for rhumatology, respiratory, and vascular treatments. Adjacent, the “Antilles” leisure center boasts wave pools, lazy rivers, toboggans, and the Seugne riverbank trails—inviting both relaxation and fun.
Surrounded by sun-kissed vineyards of Cognac and Pineau des Charentes, Jonzac is a radiant gem in the Haute-Saintonge region. The town’s winding cobbled lanes, hidden washhouses, and ancient lavoirs reveal layers of rural life and architectural surprises. It’s a place where nature, tradition, culture, and wellness blend seamlessly into every stroll.
