This month, I finally gave the French Press a try for the first time! It’s my April brewing method in the Brewing Method of the Month series ☕️

For this first test, I used:
15g of coffee (Choco Banana from Olivo Coffee Culture)
300g of water at 90°C (Third Wave Water – Medium Roast profile)
120 clicks on the Kingrinder K6 (medium-coarse grind)
30s bloom (50g), stir, then pour up to 300g

Let it steep for ~6 minutes (yep, forgot about it… 🤦‍♂️)

Despite a little overbrewing, the result was sweet and balanced. Really easy to brew, and very enjoyable!

➔ Coffee: Choco Banana (Olivo Coffee Culture)
➔ Method: French Press (Timemore, 150ml size)
➔ Water: Distilled + Third Wave Water
➔ Grind: Kingrinder K6 @ 120 clicks

  1. Hi Eduart, impressed you got another bag of Olivo, I was yesterday at their roastery in Cluj, was looking for the roast date and it was a month old, not bad. Lots of origins and their equipment is something. They even got one of that fancy Science Class cyclone bowl.

Maybe give them a try if you ever come around.

  2. Hey Eduart! What's with the Mad Scientist hair?🤣😂
Anyway, well done with trying the French Press!! I think you did very well for a first timer.👏👏
Just a couple of things, firstly I think you were very lucky with the timing, 6 mins is usually way too long for a medium roast in MY experience. Usually around 5-5:30 for the medium roast beans I use.
Again, this is only for the beans/roast I use.
Secondly, I pour the whole measure of water then wait 30 to gently stir for the bloom. The idea is to gently break up the crust formed at the top of the coffee grounds.
This helps the gas to escape (blooming) quicker.
And finally, when pouring out the coffee, be very careful not to pour out the fines that, inevitably, collect at the bottom of the French Press.
    Overall, a fantastic first attempt.🏆
I'm sure others in this community will assist.😀
I'm glad you enjoyed the coffee!

  3. Hi Eduart, still watching along every day 👍🏻 I found French press best without plunging, just drop it below the coffee when pouring out to minimise bits getting into the cup. Keep up the great work, your videos are excellent 👌🏻

  4. Nice video as always!

Arguably French Press might be the one thing that you have almost no chance of screwed it up since it simply just pure immersion and is also the closest to "cupping". The end result color look different from other method in this case might also be because V60 and Aeropress is filtered through paper so it will be more clear as for french press though it kinda filter with metal strainer, but a lot of sediment can still be in the cup hence the more cloudy color but still have to wait and see you try this beans with other methods.
If you want a cleaner cup from French Press, James Hoffmann and Lance have a good way to do it but if you already like the body of that brew then I don't think it will be necessary.

Can't wait to see how will you try and tune up this method to suit your taste!!!
