Hello fellow world travelers! Today we explore the important Siena Cathedral, the Duomo of Siena, Italy and the surrounding public square.
The facade itself is comprised of cardinal points in the west, east, north and south. The west facade is the most famous and viewed as the front of the cathedral. It is by far the most impressive work and boast 3 entry portals. The very top is crowned with bronze work sun. Combining French Gothic, Tuscan Romanesque and Classical Architecture, the west facade is a beautiful example of of Sienese workmanship.
With its profound impact on the people of Siena’s daily life since the 13th century, it is a place of worship as well as civic pride. Shrouded in legend are its original 9th century bishop’s palace residence beginnings. It also has a half-started section called the Opera de Santa Maria – the incomplete transept section still standing at the north-south. It allows you to imagine how big the addition could have been had they kept building.
