Today I’m in Perth sneaking around the back alleys reliving my time when a camera would be slung over the shoulder in search of some photos in and around the city.
I meet two Australian ladies on the street who got the dates wrong for an event they wanted to attend and we have a chat. They tell me of their many trips to Bali, what they enjoy about the island, where they stay, and what they enjoy doing while in Bali.
A man who I thought looked like a typical Aussie I thought I’d like to chat with turns out to be a French backpacker working his way around Australian on sheep farms. He tells us of his travels, the difference between Australian and French sheep, how French and Australian women are different, and his future plans.
Coincidently, I meet a Balinese woman when asking if I could take a video of her and her friends. We talk about where she lives in Bali, how she came to Australia, and when she might return to Bali for a visit.
During the day I also stop at my favorite sushi place in the Perth and show snippets of what people are up to and what happens in the city on weekends.
It’s a great walk around Perth with only a couple of days before I return to Bali.

Yes! Perth is always a bit of a shock when you get back from Bali.
Love your posts, can't wait fir you to get back to bali .
You certainly know your home when you go to buy food in the St and realise for the priic of one Nori Roll you could feed yourself for a day in Asia
Sounds like you have reverse culture shock, Wayne. I live in Jakarta, and when I return to my hometown of London, I feel like a tourist.
Brilliant vid Wayne! You echo my sentiments exactly. I've lived in Bali just over 2 years now, and other than catching up family, I just can't get enthused about returning to Perth any time soon. In summary, Perth is hot and windy, cold and windy, clean and dull.
there is nothing like a reality check to sort out where your heart really is happy.
After you visit south east asia, the whole of Australia is bland .
Nice photography.
Have you been doing much still photography whilst in Bali?
Thank you for the insight on you home, would like to see more, however l have never had any inclination to visit Australia, none whatsoever. I’m South African but absolutely love Bali, hope to retire there one day, it was a choice between Bali and India but l chose Bali, love the people and hustle and bustle of daily life in Ubud. I plan to eventually stay with my driver who has 3 guest rooms at his house, as l have almost no family it would be a good option for me to live with people l love to be around.
No worries Wayne it was a complete success ,nice artwork ,and I think your black and white shots are excellent ,see you in Ubud ,I'll buy you a beer ,cheers
Thanks Wayne another great video !
Really enjoyed the video Wayne and such lovely people you were fortunate to have a chat with, live in Rockingham and choose to avoid Perth and only visit when necessary. We have had a chat on the Bali travel forum and where I learned of your channel. Cheers mate.
Selemat siang Wayne …. Yes it is a culture shock and i understand completely how a return to overpriced sterility takes a readjustment…. Mungkin sekarang kamu bisa melihat Bali dengan sangat banyak ( appreciation) Thanks ever so much Wayne, your energy is infectious to the subject matter and now that I see you are a wonderful still photographer, I understand why you have such impeccable timing for the best outcome…. makasi teman saya 🙏
Good luck Baptiste. You are a sweetie ❤
My heart sank, I thought, oh nooo he moved back to Perth lol. I was born there but to me Perth lacks soul, unfortunately.
Jaco Pastorius is his Grandfather. Definitely looked like him.
Wayne yes Australia is sterile and sometimes boring. But it is also a safe haven in times of trouble. Bali seems westernised however it is still a third world country and the situation there can change very quickly much to the surprise of tourists. Indonesia is held together by many various regions with their own values and culture. The disdain and dislike of Java and jakarta is very real and bubbles away just below the surface and is more intense in Hindu bali. Whoops ended up going a bit political there
As a fellow Perthite and someone who's love for Bali is at the same level it was good to see your last few posts on your transition to coming back here to visit family. We support two families over there and head back there from the 10th-20th of December and again late January. This trip coming up we will also be helping out a Balinese charity. If you have time for a quick coffee, before you head back or even if we are in Bali at the same time, let me know.
So agree with the comments here today, this channel has the most intelligent subs😊
your definitely right about poms, paddys and kiwis….chasing the big bucks in little england with sunshine, on the other side of the planet….whilst theres still resources left to plunder…
You can walk down a stall at markets in Perth and get excited about the oranges too 🙄
Great episode, Wayne. Love those black and white photos (thinking of Beauty for a Better World)
Hello Wayne
Thank you for another wonderful video but this time from my old home town ❤
If you have time please go to Fremantle and visit a cafe called SUKU the owners Ric & Ria are from Bali and just such a lovely young couple and I think you would be very interested in their story….. starting in the markets to where they are now ❤
We in bali now Wayne for nephews wedding and tooth filing ceromony, had lunch at a nice local warung today in Sanur cost me $7.80 for me and my wife, had lunch at Perth airport day before only basic food and a drink cost me $47.70. Man! I love bali❤
South Beach in Freemantle is a good place to show the beauty of Perth area. You will find an interesting mix of locals & tourists..yound & old, male & female…rich & poor..ying & yang..you will be able to meet interesting folks to interview..and a nice place for a swim.
Everyone is different. To me home is where my family is. Its not a physical place. Whats the point of being in the best place on earth if your away from family it means nothing
Great vid mate , let’s all not get short sighted and lose track of how beautiful our country is here. We call it the lucky country for a reason and Perth has always been just a big country town compared to the other capitals in Australia and that’s just how we like it ❤.
Another great vlog mate.
We are here now for 7 days and yes I can agree with you that returning to Bali offers so much more than the hustle and bustle of Perth.😊
Have only been following you for a couple of months. Loving you posts. Just got home from Legian 21.11…unfortunately was not a good experience due to the company (my mistake) Will be back with my husband in foreseeable future. We are in our 50s. Would you mind if I emailed you prior for advise and guidance?? Thanks Wayne…Collie WA..left the city 15 years ago 😂😂😂😂
I've never been to Perth (did you come for the cricket?🤔) and realistically I never will, but looks ok to me, especially the wall art. Have you done photography professionally? Your old mono pics look really classy, and I've been meaning to give a shout-out to your B-roll intros, a lovely way to start each episode. I'll keep a note of your email, if I may, and see if that coffee is still on for late January.
Great video ❤😊 going to Danang Vietnam 😊
just found your channel. Are you the bloke who did the SBS show they often show of a weekend chatting to people in the street from the early 2000s
First trip to Bali was 1984 😂
Nice, refreshing videos, Wayne. Thanks for sharing. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om.
The difference I found recently were that people are nice to you , whete I live in nsw on the mid north coast , it’s beautiful beaches but omg , the snobbery and arrogance bring it down if your a solo , very clicky still tho we are getting tons of people moving up from sydney . It was refreshing to see truly humble people mostly and it was my first time . Humidity in horrible but don’t know if I’d get used to that but it’s tempting to go again
All the best people live in Perth!💓🌸have you got the Bali blues yet??💓🌸😘
Sounds like you've found 'your place' in Bali. It's wonderful when one does. That place that lifts your heart each time you take a moment to simply look…… May it continue for you.
Good choice that’s my favourite sushi hub lm from perth just back from bali and now in surabaya visit my family and soon back to bali then perth back to reality work,so lucky u go back bali Rilex life
