It's been a while since I heard a full-on electric blues version of this song, which is often rendered as a 30s folk or piano blues. So it's really interesting to see Margot's take on what people insist on calling a classic (like what? A 1959 Porsche or 40s movie?) Mr Cotten on Les Paul Junior playing a fantastic slide intro brings us across to Margot on Strat and Paul Senior bass, completing the major guitars lineup. Only musicians who fully understand blues phrasing and blues culture can sing Nobody Knows You.. with true conviction. Authenticity being Margot's middle name, she adds new depth to this song that still has economic relevance today. The tone of everything, including the keyboards, looks back to the song's original intention–which to me was to highlight someone's harsh change of lifestyle–without any self-pity and with the aim of turning a bad experience into artful entertainment. And let's not forget the careful time and thought that went into constructing the great video. Hey, all Bessie Smith had to do was sing…Moh
