Fans of romance will find plenty to feast on in this French gourmet drama, with a heavy emphasis on cooking as love, although it is a real slow burner.

Definitely make sure you don’t have an empty stomach when you see The Taste of Things by Trần Anh Hùng, who won Best Director at Cannes in 2023. Juliette Binoche has cooked for and with gourmet Benoît Magimel for 20 years but they’ve never married, but that might change, however her health is starting to decline.

As you’d expect with the culinary subject, this is the Frenchiest film that ever Frenched, with extended sequences of food preparation: the textures of the meat and vegetables, the sounds of pouring and boiling, the steam escaping… it creates something that’s very sensory and even cinematic.

The care, intricacy, and presentation of the cooking turns them into love scenes, and there is a soft, yearning chemistry between Binoche and Magimel, who were a real life couple for several years. The film is definitely an acquired taste, but this is a very gentle, bittersweet love story for foodies,

That’s often lip smackingly delicious, even if it’s a bit too much of a slow cook for my own personal appetites.
