Wait Ed I think you’re forgetting something what’s up Lou oh gloves a you know I’m not a fan of gloves but you have to I know welcome back to bordo life as you can see we’re getting on with this block wall ready to hold the uh the first
Floor so as you can see we’re getting this wall up it’s been a bit boring work so I’ve not bothered filming it but we’re getting there now um we’re going to pour another lintle up top here and it’s going to be obviously this the depth of the wood below the window
Uh that’s going to be the finished height there is something I want to show everyone up here um because of a couple of comments that we got so if you can pass me the camera Louie so we have tied this wall in with stainless steel rods that have been resined into the
Wall uh every every kind of meter and every three courses so there’s another couple over there and stainless seal so they don’t rust and don’t expand in the stone and of course that ties this big wall here into this wall here which in turn is horizontally tied into the beams coming
Across so yeah just explained about the uh stainless steel rods into the wall I’m using a string um to keep my blocks uh straight so they’re not like this and um and yeah this is a this is this is a kind of method that we use or technique that we
Use in France and that is you know people are saying why are you not buttering up the edges of your block your cinder block uh buttering up means putting um uh sand and cement mix on the end of the block I’m not doing that because there’s a special cavity made um
I’ll show you in a second but there’s a special cavity made and uh basically that cavity leaves the space for you to to put some concrete in and um the two blocks are then uh kind of stuck together it’s all very strong that way so we’ve got
Those steel rods we need a bit more mix so that it all connects in really well and I don’t mind losing some down the bottom okay so we finished that line now let’s go back and uh fill in the holes Okay Lou are you annoyed with me why well am I stealing your job yes but I’m okay with filming okay Spiel birad traveling no it is therapeutic it’s first thing in the morning and I am a morning person aren’t I Louie yeah much much better mood in a morning oh
Yes like I said there I think there’s another line to go on there and then we’re going to pour this lentil up the top ready for the beams coming in uh the joist sorry um let’s have a quick look outside and uh where we’ve already put the joist
In I just wanted to take today’s Vlog to just explain a couple of things because got same question coming up time and time again and um it’s because I know that not everybody watches every Vlog so I’ll repeat myself again this area here I’ve had some people say why don’t you
Put a lovely glass kind of Veranda on here and a little expand all of the kind of living space it it then gives us it give us probably another 20 well 25 30 m squared the reason I can’t do that is because we’re in a flood zone uh it’s
Very light flood zone and we’re below the C soy so the the line of which you’re allowed to um to have habital new habitable space so I’m not actually allowed to create new habitable space which is why as well I’ve got that little room where we’ve got the uh we’re
Going to put the washing machine bike bin and all that lot because it’s not classed as habitable um and it won’t be heated either so um that’s the reasoning behind the layout down here um also second of all if we had a a glass kind of
Conservatory on the back here it goes to 40° in summer sometimes here it’d get really really hot I know there’s great technology out there but you can have all the technology you want in the world is still going to get hot maybe not stifling hot but it’s still going to
Heat the heat the uh house and the idea is that I create a house here that doesn’t need a lot of air conditioning doesn’t need a lot of heating in winter so for me it’s kind of uh counterproductive some people agree with me as well that it’s nice to have an
Outdoor space I would if I could turn all of this into habitable because me squared is everything when you’re talking about price in Bordeaux of course you know needs to be well renovated but can’t do it and uh I knew that straight off so that’s why I’ve not
Uh not decided to to do any of this kind of extension downstairs I knew you couldn’t so I just wanted to talk about this beam here everyone had a few people in the comments saying that these are cinder blocks and then the beam underneath is the wrong way around and
Both are underneath this metal girder and that they’ll all fall when I take the acros out well these are not cinder blocks they are a linal so there’s concrete metal in that lentil and this wood here is literally just there whilst I have the acros to hold those up Let
The concrete go off and cure and then in a week or two’s time we’ll be taking those acros out and the lint will stay up on its own underneath the metal beam and it’s really not a problem I do have a couple of questions for you about these uh beams that we’ve
Already put in first of all what are Noggins and second of all who’s Dan Preston now I’m only messing with you I do know what they are and they are going in it was just the other day I was really excited to get this wood up and I
Completely forgot to say yeah we’re going to go back and put Noggins in um of course we’re putting them in and the reason you put them in is to stop these beams from twisting especially because they are kind of freshly green wood as such I know they’ve dried out a little
Bit but nowhere near as K as dry as kill and dried in the UK um so it’s really important to get those Noggins in it it gives it a bit of rigidity too um on the other side we’re going to actually put Noggins in the middle as well to give it even more
Rigidity is it rigidity can we say that in English I don’t know uh um because it’s a fairly long span um and I’m just a little bit worried for the ceiling underneath more than anything so I’m going to pop some Noggins in the middle of that that run too okay I’m going to
Get on finish that block work today let it dry and tomorrow we’re going to come back and film putting these uh putting the rest of these beams in um and I might have a an inspector come and inspect what I’m doing tomorrow as well um and it’s not Anna this Time

Will you be injecting cavity wall insulation between the existing wall and the new block work? I know it's a small gap!
Who is Dan Preston 😅
He is the noggin man, baby 😅
👉 Eeeek – – did I hear you say that the "little room" where the washing machine will be is NOT going to be heated ??? Where I lived in Victorville, the washer dryer was in the garage. The excess heat/cold seasonally in the high desert made using the utility an event that had to be planned around the weather conditions. Oh well, I suppose you didn't have a choice and the resident can always plug in a space heater if it's really cold. (ps – RIGIDITY is a word.) 😊
great update, thanks Ed. I hope you and Loui will be singing the Noggin Song!
Thank you, Ed. It's great that you share your thoughts with us and explain the whyfors.
lol! I thought about the noggins too! 🤣🤣
Blessings Ed and Anna. 😊
I wish I worked with Louis when I used to lay those blocks , your hands feel fine all day without gloves until you get home and jump in the shower and the shampoo burns your hands like acid 😭🤣cheers Ed🍻
Edd, you are doing a great job! Just think: in another 120 years, someone could find your good work. 😊
Good job , crack on.😂
beautiful It will be.
There will always be those who know and can do it better unfortunately
Oh boy seems like i did stick a hornets nest lol about the noggins comment edd know what you are doing well my point was we never stop leaning and maybe switch up lol so please do not take it as critic 😢😊❤😊❤
Good morning. Good to see you guys again.😊👍
Your doing a great job on rebuilding the place.👍
Always good to wear gloves for protection.
Yes sir the more support and noggins you put in the more sturdy the 2nd floor will be,make less noise and last for many years.😬
Always nice to have a private patio space to go out on on nice days and evenings.😊👍
Will be nice to have a 2nd patio on the 2nd floor.👍
Adding more square footage to a home increases value but unfortunately like you said on that home you cannot make that into liveable space so sad.
Be safe and careful.😊👍🙏
It`s coming along real nice steady Eddy, we got screwy Louie on the camera, Ed you don`t have to explain everything you are doing to us, it is quite obvious building codes in France and the U.S.A. are quite different, so be it. When I am working with rough wood I will wear gloves, but otherwise they drive me crazy when I am using a screwgun or hamering nails, demolition always, but I like to feel things with my hands. Keep the videos coming Ed, it`s nice to see things moving forward and the demo work done, take care guys.
“Who is Dan Preston?” 😂😂
Doing a great job love this slowly coming back to life these buildings are so full of potential.
Your ideas are perfect, you can renovate my home any day.
It’s wonderful seeing your progress on this project.
Things are coming together! I enjoy these videos. Peace
Excellent explanations, I do appreciate when you stop to discuss the varying techniques used and the reasons for doing so.
I like an outdoor space, even if it is minimal but it helps to fill up with plants ant to air the house. So exciting to see the beams up there, nice height for them too!
Send Billy and Gwen home with some good wine 🍷
Omg noggins like in rural France !
It looks wonderful, Edd and I trust your engineering skills!!!
Edd and Louis, to me, you are both doing an amazing job. Keep up the good work.❤
Edd and his family renovated Chateau Lagorce, one, if not, the biggest chateau in the Bordeaux area (8000 sq feet) and has turned it into a stunning wedding venue.
Edd and Anna along with Cyril (former employee) renovated Villenave aka passion project. (Louis joined when Villenave was almost complete)
Edd, Anna and Louis are now renovating a town house…..and people think he needs advice from Dan the Gardener 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 F**k me dead 🤣🤣🤣🤣 that thought made me laugh way too much 😂🤣🤣🤣
Love Dans channel and what hes doing is amazing BUT never would i ever tell someone like Edd who has way more experience in renovation and who – with his family- has brought back to life a Chateau of enormous proportion and a maison de maître and now renovating a townhouse to go seek advice or watch to get tips from someone who basically just started renovating a small-ish chateau 😂😂😂
Best laugh in a while 😊❤😂 cant wait to see the noggings 🤣🤣
I'm impressed that the brickwork is going to support all the upper floor. Not using the stone wall at all. Well thought Ed.
Seeing the close up of the metal rods and blocks..with your explanation…made us feel like we were there!
I enjoyed that..
Loving the process!!
😂 Loved the noggins comment!
Those beams you put in, do they not have to be attached to the steel in some way? is it ok if they're "loose"?
❤
