Is it can be tricky getting the score you need can be challenging especially if the test includes the most challenging task types if you’re wanting a high score in the AL exam you’re going to need to be ready to correctly answer these difficult questions fortunately that’s what we’re going to be doing in

This video we’re going to practice answering some of the hardest questions in the AL exam so get a pen and paper and prepare yourself for some brain Busters as we take a look at the hardest tasks in each of the four a sections we’ll start with a listening section

First now one of the most difficult task types in this section is multiple choice multiple choice can be tricky because you have to read the questions and answer options match what you hear to the options and try to keep up with the audio recording all at the same time but

The questions we’re going to look at today are even harder because of this instruction here you need to choose two correct answer options not just one although you could get multiple choice questions in any part of the listening test in this video we’re going to focus on part three in

This part of the test you’ll hear a conversation between two three or even four people and they’ll be discussing an academic project or course of some kind so another reason this question type is challenging is because the questions may ask you about one of the speakers or all

Of them for example here questions one and two say which two things do Jenny and Liam agree to include in their presentation while questions three and four say which two feelings did Liam experience during the exchange so you need to read each question carefully and make a note of whom the question is

About then when you listen to the audio you must understand not only the answer but also who expresses the idea or opinion this can be tricky another issue to consider is that the answer options are not in the order you’ll hear them in the conversation for example the first

Option in the list could be mentioned last usually you’ll hear most or even all of the options mentioned in some way but only two of them will answer the question this makes understanding exactly what the speakers say about each option very important don’t choose an option just because the speakers talk

About it you need to make sure it answers the question one thing that many Al candidates find difficult is that the questions and options don’t use the same vocabulary that you’ll hear on the recording so when you’re looking for key words in the questions and the options

You need to paraphrase those key words in your head think of other ways to say the same thing for example in option A here photos of Key activities photos could be pictures or images or snapshots I wants to test your vocabulary so remember to listen for meaning not for

The exact word finally this type of question sometimes test your ability to identify the speaker’s attitude feelings or emotions and this is challenging because the speaker may not say I was angry or I don’t trust them instead the feelings can be implied by the words they use to describe the situation so

Again this is how I is testing your vocabulary range and understanding of the small differences in meaning between different Expressions let’s have a closer look at the task for the multiple choice activity we’re going to practice if you want you can download this hardest question practice booklet for

Free it includes all the questions from this video I recommend it if you plan on taking the paper based test T it also includes a few bonus practice questions download it by clicking the link in the description before the recording of the conversation starts you’ll hear some audio instructions that provide the

Context listen to those carefully as any additional information can help prepare you for the conversation you’ll hear then there will be time for you to read the questions and the options use that time wisely reading the questions and options noticing the keywords and thinking about ways to paraphrase them

In a moment you’ll be able to practice this task remember do not immediately choose the first option you hear the speakers may go on to say something that indicates a different answer keep listening while the speakers discuss the other options now it’s your turn to try

This activity and then I’ll be back to check the answers now look at part three part three you will hear two students called Liam and Jenny discussing a French Exchange program they took part in first you have some time to look at questions 1 to 4 now listen carefully and answer

Questions 1 to 4 so Jenny we need to put together our presentation about our French exchange trip yeah it was certainly an interesting semester studying French abroad at the University of Le was quite a different experience to studying French here absolutely I think we can share lots of insights in

Our presentation to help other students work out whether the exchange program is right for them so Liam what information do you think we should include well I don’t think we need to go into too much detail about the institution itself because it won’t be relevant to students

Who go to study at other universities oh that’s a good point I was thinking about including some visuals to show where the University was located in the town so people could see how far away it was from where we were staying and so on but you’re right that wouldn’t be useful for

Everyone I think featuring some visuals is a great idea though it would make the presentation much more engaging and it would allow us to Showcase some highlights of our trip like attending the bastial Day Celebrations and our weekend skiing in the Pyers all that incredible scen

I think people would like to see that agreed do you think we should show some things on campus too like the lectures and tutorials good idea we could even display our weekly schedule to give others an idea of what it entailed what do you think sounds good I’d also really

Like to include some details about the families we stayed with too they really helped to make the exchange such a fantastic experience for us and it would be a fitting way to show our appreciation to them remember they won’t get to see this presentation though maybe we can think them in some other

Way I suppose so so while we’re giving the presentation we can share our overall Impressions and views on the exchange of course what’s your memory of what it was like on our first day oh I remember being a bag of nerves it was really daunting but you seemed surprisingly

Calm I think I was I always got excellent grades for my friendship here so I was confident I could cope in France but then we got into the first lecture and it was like what’s happening why can’t I understand anything the lecturers all spoke so quickly and the other students accents were really

Difficult to understand but we didn’t give up and we improved massively in the end I thought well done us yeah I feel like we sound more like native speakers now and I don’t think we would have achieved that in such a short time over here

So how did you go were you able to identify two correct options for each question let’s have a look at the transcript of this conversation as we go through the answers the first question was which two things do Jenny and Liam agree to include in their presentation

The first option they discuss is when Liam says I don’t think we need to go into too much detail about the institution itself and Jenny agrees with him by saying that’s a good point the word institution is a synonym for University and they decide against including details about this this means

That we can eliminate option C a description of the French University Jenny also says that she was thinking about including some visuals to show where the University was located in the town and this has the same meaning as a map of the city in option D but she then

Goes goes on to say that it wouldn’t be useful for everyone so we can eliminate option D so hopefully you see the process you need to follow here match what the speaker say to the options by recognizing the paraphrase in the audio recording then listen carefully to understand whether the speakers both

Agree to include this option in their presentation if they don’t eliminate it next the students discuss more visuals Liam says I think feature ing some visuals is a great idea though do we have another word for visuals in the options yes we do photos in option A

Jenny suggests they could use visuals to Showcase some highlights of our trip and highlights has the same meaning as Key activities in option A they both agree to include those visuals Liam says I think people would like to see that and Jenny says agreed so we can choose

Option A photos of Key activities as one of the the correct answers remember we have one more option to choose so we need to keep listening Jenny next says do you think we should show some things on campus 2 like the lectures and tutorials and Liam replies good idea we

Could even display our weekly schedule here weekly schedule together with lectures and tutorials has the same meaning as the timetable of their studies in option e Jenny said says sounds good so she agrees and we can choose option e as our second answer but what about option b was it mentioned at

All the option is information about their host did you hear a paraphrase of that have a look at what Jenny says next I’d also really like to include some details about the families we stayed with too so the families we stayed with means their hosts and it sounds like

Jenny wants to include this in the presentation but be careful here the question is about what they both agree to include remember this is one of the challenges of this task all the options are mentioned but the correct answer is what they both agree on so we must keep

Listening Liam explains why there’s no point in providing host details he says remember they won’t get to see this presentation though and Jenny agrees with him so we cannot choose option b so these are the correct answers for questions 1 and two options A and E let’s now look at

Questions three and four we need to identify the feelings that Liam not Jenny experienced during The Exchange in France the first answer option is nervousness was it mentioned well it was but who was nervous let’s check the transcript they’re talking about their first day on The Exchange and Jenny says

Oh I remember being a bag of nerves the phrase a bag of nerves is a synonym of nervousness but it’s Jenny who says this so this is a distractor because the question is about Liam’s feelings we can eliminate option A and we need to keep listening first Liam explains that he

Was confident about his ability to cope in France because he always got good grades for his French here meaning in his country and then he says but and the word but is very important because it’s a clear sign that the speaker is about to contrast or contradict what they just

Said this is what makes the task so challenging the speaker may change their mind or give you additional information that changes what they said before so it’s important to listen to the end Liam continues but then we got into the first lecture and it was like what’s happening

Why can’t I understand anything and so what is Liam saying here when some someone says what’s happening what are they experiencing out of the options we have confusion is the best match so we can choose option C now we need to identify another feeling Jenny mentioned some of the problems they encountered

The lecturers all spoke so quickly and the other students accents were really difficult to understand and then Liam explains that he and other students didn’t give up which means they were able to do something difficult and succeed his words well done us show that he is proud of this achievement which

Means we can choose option D Pride this is another example of why this task is challenging Liam doesn’t say directly I felt proud but we need to understand this implied meaning when he says well done us so the correct options for questions three and four are C and D if

You are taking the paper test remember you can write these in any order in the computer test you will just click the two options so let’s summarize the tips we’ve discussed because they will really help you with this type of question first read the instructions carefully notice and underline the number of

Answers you must choose from the list of options secondly listen to the introduction at the start of the audio as it provides the context for the conversation it tells you who is talking and what they’re talking about which helps you understand the conversation better next read the questions and

Options underline or highlight the keywords and think about how they might be paraphrased another strategy is to notice words that signal a change to the meaning such as the word but or negatives like don’t be careful with options that seem like they could be correct but then the speaker says

Something that changes the meaning this is a common trap in is to test your ability to understand the whole message so the final tip is to listen to everything the speaker say about an option before choosing the correct answer if you follow these tips you’ll find it much easier to stay on track

With multiple choice questions eliminate the wrong options and choose the correct ones so you won’t need to worry about these challenging questions anymore and if you’d like to practice these tips with more lisening part three multiple choice questions head over to E2 test prep.com and sign up for a free

Trial okay let’s move on to the reading section in this part of the video you’ll learn some strategies for another tricky Al task matching headings let me show you what this looks like in matching headings you’ll see a text which is divided into paragraphs or sections

There’s a list of headings and you need to match each paragraph with the correct heading from the list there are always more headings than the number of paragraphs so some of the headings won’t be used you can see in this task there are five paragraphs and seven headings

So two of those headings will not match any of the paragraphs is Reading in general and the matching heading task in particular tests a variety of skills involved in understanding a text you may have heard of skimming scanning reading for gist identifying details and other reading techniques and a good reader

Uses all of them one of the challenges of I reading is knowing when to use each skill to get the best results the matching headings task specifically tests your ability to understand the main idea of each paragraph and know the difference between the main idea and the

Supporting ideas and detail s you also need to understand what the headings say and recognize how the headings paraphrase or summarize the information in the paragraphs another thing we know our students find challenging in Al reading is having limited time you need to be quite fast as you only have 20

Minutes for each section of the test and matching headings isn’t the only task in that section so you need to be able to identify the main idea in each paragraph quickly without reading for an in-depth understanding of every detail in the text the way the headings are written is

Another challenge there are often some similarities between headings so you’ll need to read them carefully to identify the difference and decide which one describes the paragraph better some will focus on a detail of a paragraph instead of the main idea and that could be misleading other headings may use some

Of the same words as in the text to distract you from the main idea then there’s vocabulary if your range is limited you may find the vocabulary in the heading difficult this may make it hard for you to understand the relationship between the heading and the

Main idea of the paragraph So how do we approach this tricky task the quickest method is to go straight to the first paragraph and read it pay attention to the first and last sentences in the paragraph because they often tell you what this section is about once you

Understand the main idea of the first paragraph try to summarize it in your head in a short sentence or phrase then read each heading one by one notice the keywords in each heading do they match or paraphrase your own summary of the paragraph’s main idea you should read

Through the whole list before choosing the best match for the paragraph then repeat this process for the other paragraphs now I’m going going to give you time to try the task we looked at before you’ll see each paragraph on the screen with the list of headings so

Pause the video so you can read the first paragraph and when you’re ready hit play to get to the next paragraph remember if you want you can download the hardest question practice booklet which will make the process of reading and answering much easier download it for free by clicking the link in the

Description okay so here’s the first paragraph feel free to pause the video now here’s the second paragraph here’s the third paragraph here’s the fourth paragraph and here’s the final paragraph so how did you go let’s have a look at the answers in paragraph a the first sentence says learning to read is

A crucial component of school curricula around the world the second sentence explains this idea why reading is important at school and the rest of the paragraph extends the idea by saying that it’s important not only at school but in all areas of life it says it’s essential for personal and professional

Development and vital for accessing information making informed decisions and understanding diverse perspectives so this sounds like the main idea is that reading is an important skill throughout life now let’s read through the headings when you read the headings keep focusing on your summary of the main idea it’s important to keep going

Through the whole list even if you think you found a match you never know if a different heading at the bottom of the list may sound closer to the main idea the heading that match matches our understanding of the paragraph is number four a key life skill the word key means

Extremely important and as we’ve seen the paragraph has many references to how important reading is in many different areas of life now you should go on to the next paragraph read it and summarize its main message in your own way briefly and clearly it’s like creating your own

Heading so the matching process becomes easier look at these parts of par B that give us the main message children absorb a great variety of information from their surroundings these surroundings significantly influence their ability to read quality time spent with parents insufficient exposure to books and limited interaction with literary

Phrases lead to reading difficulties later in life all of this is about things that influence children’s reading ability what young children experience what they hear around them and how they spend time with their parents which heading contains this main idea it’s number seven the importance of a child’s environment child’s environment is a

Summary of all of those things mentioned in the paragraph you might have been tempted to choose heading six from pre-readers to experts but although the paragraph does discuss pre-readers that is young children who don’t read yet it doesn’t discuss expert readers so we can’t choose this heading because it

Doesn’t accurately summarize the main idea in this paragraph we’ve now used two of the headings in the list in the exam you can cross out the used up headings if you’re sure about your choices this will help you focus on the remaining options if you’re taking the

Test on computer you’ll drag and drop the heading above the correct paragraph which will help you see which headings are left in the list now let’s read the next paragraph this part of the text is discusses when children should be taught how to read which the text calls children’s formal instruction in Reading

We can see that some scholars believe one thing and others think a different approach is better a third group some parents think babies should learn to read so different people have different opinions about this and there is a debate or disagreement about the best age to teach reading the heading that

Has the same idea is number one diverse voices has the same meaning as people with a range of opinions you can see that the headings paraphrase the main ideas in the paragraphs so being able to recognize that paraphrase is a key skill here let’s keep practicing it as we look

At paragraph D this paragraph describes a process of developing reading skills stage by stage the first sentence starts with the words the first phase which gives us is the idea that there’ll be other phases then we have the next stage the novice reading phase as children progress they become more confident and

Fluent finally reaching the advanced reader phase so how can we summarize what this paragraph describes it explains a reader’s ability at each stage of development from a low level to a high proficient level of reading let’s check if there’s a heading with a similar meaning here heading number six

Captures the idea of moving from level to level from pre-readers to experts the word pre-readers is a paraphrase of emerging reader phase in the first sentence we know this because the prefix pre means before so a pre-reader is at a stage before being a reader and the text

Says that in the emerging reader phase young children listen to someone reading to them meaning that they can’t read themselves the word experts in the heading means the same as having exceptional proficiency which is what we see in the last sentence so from pre-readers to experts is a great

Summary of the process of learning to read which this paragraph explains did you manage to avoid the distractor here heading three is why some children read slowly and the word slowly appears in the paragraph it says that children become more confident and no longer need to slowly sound out every letter but

This paragraph does not explain why children read slowly and even if it did this is not the main idea of the paragraph So this cannot be the correct heading one more paragraph to go when you were looking for the correct heading for this paragraph it may have presented

A few challenges so let me show you what to watch out for the first sentence tells us that the paragraph is about the best methods for teaching teing students how to read that sounds like a number of methods will be mentioned the next few sentences explain the role of phonics

How the sounds of the language match the written letters but the sentences in the middle suggest that this method has limitations saying but this can be challenging and mastering the alphabetic code alone does not guarantee proficient reading at this point you might think that the writer is criticizing the phonic method

And you may be tempted to choose heading five the discrediting of phonics but remember we need to get the central idea of the whole paragraph So let’s read the rest of the paragraph and check the overall main message in the middle of the paragraph we find another approach

To teaching reading but the next sentence says that this approach is not as effective as phonic based methods this says that the phonic method is not so so bad after all and that means that heading five the discrediting of phonics would not be correct because it doesn’t

Match the meaning of the text the final sentence says that some Educators choose to combine both methods this last sentence presents a kind of conclusion having looked at the pros and cons of two different methods it says that a combination of both methods is often used and the heading that matches this

Idea is number two two an integration of techniques integration means combination and techniques is a synonym of methods so you can see that to do well in this task you really need to focus on choosing a heading that summarizes or paraphrases the main idea of the paragraph or section and not a small

Detail you also need to avoid headings that seem correct but actually don’t match the exact meaning of the text and don’t forget that we have plenty of practice questions for all of the matching type questions in is over at E2 test prep.com put the strategies we’ve looked at into

Practice to help you increase your speed and confidence on test day and finally it’s a really good idea to continue building your vocabulary this is important not just for matching headings but for all parts of the a test okay let’s move on to the speaking section now in this part of the

Video we’re going to look at part two of the speaking test called The Long Turn everyone gets nervous before their is speaking test it’s natural talking to a native speaker can make you feel shy or anxious and in an exam situation that feeling only gets stronger you’ve told

Us that part two of the speaking test is the part that makes you feel the most worried so that’s what we’re going to focus on now to give you the confidence you need to get the best score on test day in part two you’ll be given a task

Card like this one you can see it has a main instruction about the topic which here is describe a type of food you would like to try and underneath there are some other points you could talk about you’ll have one minute to prepare what you’re going to say you’ll then

Need to speak for between 1 and two minutes the topics are about you things you do things you like something that happened to you in the past or something you might do in the future during your part two because it’s a long turn you need to show your ability to extend your

Response although you’re given instructions to speak for one to two minutes to get a high score you really need to keep going for the full two minutes until the examiner stops you this gives you the best chance to demonstrate your ability to meet the speaking assessment criteria the

Speaking test is assessed on four criteria fluency and coherence lexical resource or your vocabulary grammatical range and accuracy and pronunciation The Examiner will give you a band score for each of these which will be combined to produce your overall speaking band score so what do candidates find are the

Biggest speaking part two challenges well meeting the criteria of fluency is a big challenge and what’s fluency firstly it’s the length of your answer the ability to speak for the full two minutes a fluent answer is also one where you don’t hesitate too much you don’t think too

Long about your words another problem some people have is a lack of ideas along with difficulty extending those ideas in this task you need to think on your feet which means thinking of ideas quickly you do have some time to prepare but it’s only one minute one reason it’s

Hard to think of ideas is because there’s such a wide range of possible topics in a speaking for example some common part two topics include books art magazines films or music friends family or special occasions Hobbies sport travel or shopping or jobs transport communication technology or the environment and many more and because

The range of speaking topics is so wide it means that you may not have enough words to express yourself well you need a rich and diverse vocabulary that would be appropriate for each topic this includes using synonyms so that you can paraphrase yourself instead of repeating

The same words again and again you also need to use correct collocations words that go together together as well as idiomatic language especially if you’re aiming for a higher score building your vocabulary takes time but it’s essential for all parts of a correct use of grammar is another challenge part two

Topics may ask you to describe what happened in the past or to discuss your experience so far or to talk about what might happen in the future all of these require different grammar tenses so you need to pay attention to your use of grammar and make sure you demonstrate your grammatical range and

Accuracy let’s have another look at our sample speaking part two task to see how we might overcome some of these challenges the first thing to do is make sure you understand your topic in this task you need to describe a type of food you’d like to try first of all notice

That the topic is asking you to talk about a food you haven’t tried yet this is the meaning of would like to try some people ask do I have to tell the truth the answer is no you can make things up but make sure that if you decide to make

Up an answer it’s about something you know how to describe in English for example don’t say you’d like to try Italian food if you don’t know words like pizza and spaghetti another question that sometimes arises is whether you need to cover all the prompts on your card in this topic there

Are four prompts talking about the type of food explaining how you know about this food suggesting where you would try it and explaining why you’d like to try it you don’t have to talk about these prompts they’re suggested to help you plan your answer but you can skip them

Talk about them in a different order or add other information use them if it helps but don’t worry if the examiner stops you before you’ve mentioned them all so what vocab cabulary could you use for this task can you think of any collocations for types of food how about

Fast food street food gourmet food or the food of a particular country such as Mexican food what about any adjectives or idioms to describe food maybe words like sweet or savory cost an arm and a leg or makes your mouth water thinking of ideas and vocabulary in your

Preparation time can really help you to focus what about the grammar you can use for this question what tenses could we use in our response to show our grammatical range well notice the word is here when you’re describing the type of food you can use the present tense what about how

You know about something this is talking about when you first learned about the type of food so for this part you could use past tenses then notice would in this prompt this is talking about a hypothetical situation so you could use modal verbs it’s also talking about

Something that might happen so you could use future tenses one final tip at the start of your part two long turn try to paraphrase the prompt for example if the task says describe a special meal you had don’t Begin by saying I’m going to describe a special meal I had this is

Boring but more importantly it’s not helping you to get a higher score because you’re not showing enough flexibility in your language let’s see how we could start better instead of repeating the words from the task card you can impress The Examiner by using your own vocabulary and adding some details for example I’d

Like to tell you about a time when my family and I went out for dinner or I’m going to talk about a special lunch meeting I had with a colleague last week these sentences have some good collocations and they introduce the same topic but without using the same words

So I hope that’s giving you some ideas to get started now it’s time for you to have a go first I’ll give you one minute to prepare your answer to this question feel free to pause the video and take one minute to prepare your response okay I hope you came up with

Some great ideas now you’ll have two minutes to give your response I suggest you record yourself after that we’ll listen to a sample response and you’ll be able to compare it with yours okay ready to give your response feel free to pause the video time yourself for 2 minutes and give your

Response so how did you go with your long turn I’m going to play a sample answer now look at the topic again listen carefully and think about why this is a good example of of a part two response let’s listen thank you now I’m going to give

You a topic and I would like you to talk about it for one to two minutes you’ll have one minute to prepare and you can write notes if you want do you understand yes I do okay here is your card and some paper to write some notes

I’d like you to describe a type of food you would like to try all right remember you have one to two minutes for this so don’t worry if I stop you I’ll tell you when the time is up can you start speaking now please well the type of

Food I’d like to try is indigenous Australian food which is often known as Bush Tucker It’s food that’s native to Australia and has been grown gathered prepared and eaten for Millennia by indigenous Australians I first heard about about Bush tuer when I was watching a TV show called I’m a

Celebrity get me out of here on that show the contestant were challenged with eating some of the more unusual indigenous ingredients such as green ants and witchery grabs which look similar to caterpillars while I feel a bit too squeamish to try those particular Foods it did lead me to

Research other indigenous Foods I learned about fruits like Davids and plums which are Tangy rather than sweet and nuts like the bun nut which is like a giant pine nut and when cooked apparently tastes like butter potatoes I also learned about Native flavorings like lemon Myrtle which gives a lemon

Sherbet flavor and can be used in anything from carries to cakes and M pepperberry and salt Bush which are Bush alternatives to Salt and Pepper I haven’t tried any of those ingredients before and they sound so tempting so I’d love to try this Cuisine I also

Think it would be a great way of learning more about indigenous Australian culture from that perspective I’d love to try this food in an indigenous culinary experience in Outback Australia I think it would be fascinating to see how the food is traditionally prepared and of course

Even better to try the food I’m planning on visiting Ali Springs and Uluru sometime next year so I think I’ll try and see if there’s a suitable Bush talker experience that I can take part in there thank you do you think other people would also like to try this food

Oh yes absolutely I think it sounds delicious and it’s also a great way for people to learn more about indigenous Australian culture and Heritage did you notice that at the end of The Long Turn The Examiner asked a follow-up question this may or may not have happen in your exam think of it

Like a part one question you should answer it briefly and specifically if it’s a yes no question give a short and direct response first such as yes I do or no I haven’t and then extend it in one or two sentences okay let’s look at the candidates long-term response to see

What makes this a good answer and learn some tips and tricks to help you give a high-scoring response too here’s the transcript let’s think about the first marking Criterion fluency and coherence this candidate was able to speak at length with no long pauses or hesitations like saying um or ah and he

Kept going for the full two minutes so he had good fluency what about coherence this has to do with organizing your anwers so that the listener can follow your ideas easily notice first of all how the candidate started his response the type of food I’d like to try is he

Went straight into the topic without wasting any time on anything unrelated some candidates feel that they need an introduction like today I’m going to talk about a type of food I would like to try but this is not necessary my advice is to go straight to the first

Point you want to make the candidate also used a good number of linking words so also and of course reference words those ingredients that perspective this food and other phrases that help organize and connect ideas making the response easier to follow now remember that the speaking test is informal so

You should use linking words that are more natural in speech for example so instead of therefore but not however and also instead of additionally it’s not wrong to use those more formal or academic words but they’ll probably interrupt the natural flow of your speech which will affect your scores for

Both fluidy and coherence and pronunciation another thing that makes this a strong response is the amount of detail included such as all the examples of unusual ingredients what the food tastes like and what it’s used for these all contribute to having a strong topic development which is really important

For higher scores INF fluency and coherence let’s move on to the next criteria lexical resource it’s clear that this speaker knows a lot of vocabulary related to indigenous Australian food like Davidson plums and the bun nut but there’s also a good range of verbs such as grown gathered prepared eaten challenged and the

Speaker uses an impressive range of adjectives and adverbs such as squeamish Tangi sweet giant buttered tempting fascinating and traditionally which enhance the response making it descriptive and more interesting a lot of these words are what I calls less common items because they’re not the basic everyday words we use all the time

You need to use some Advanced words like these if you’re aiming for a band seven or higher the next speaking Criterion is grammatical range and accuracy range means that you have to show a variety of structures that you can use flexibly flexibly means that you can choose the

Grammar that’s most suitable for the point you’re making to give you an example when talking about past events you have to choose the most appropriate grammar tense is it past simple or past continuous could it be the present perfect tense to talk about something that started in the past but is still

Happening in our audio AIO the speaker made use of a wide range of tenses with high accuracy heard past simple was watching past continuous I feel present simple haven’t tried present perfect I’m planning present continuous for future plans and I’ll try future the speaker also used a range of grammatical

Structures including relative clause like which look similar to caterpillars and comparative forms such as more unusual and rather than sweet you can see modal verbs like can and would and a big range of simple compound and complex sentences throughout pronunciation includes using the correct sounds of the English language which can be different

From your first language then there’s intonation when your voice goes up and down because you need to avoid a monotone which is a flat tone that’s very difficult to listen to you also need to speak with meaning this includes using correct word and sentence stress good Rhythm using connected speech and

Having the right pace neither too fast nor too slow let’s listen to some examples to illustrate what I mean firstly let’s think about the speaker’s intonation and has been grown gathered prepared and eaten for Millennia did you notice how the intonation made the meaning clearer grown gathered prepared and eaten all

Have upwards intonation to show he’s giving a list and then Millennia has downwards intonation to show the list is finished let’s listen to another example of good intonation while I feel a bit too Squamish to try those particular Foods it did lead me to research all indigenous Foods did you hear how his

Voice went up on squeamish to highlight his feeling and a similar thing happened on did here his voice goes up to emphasize the word using intonation to help the listener understand your meaning and feelings is a key part of scoring well in pronunciation let’s listen to an example of appropriate rhythm in this

Response I also learned about Native flavor ings like lemon Myrtle which gives a lemon sherbet flavor and can be used in anything from cares to cakes did you notice how the candidate groups words together into chunks or ideas and pauses in between this is very important as it helps The Listener follow your

Ideas more easily finally let’s think about whether the speaker uses connected speech I haven’t tried any of those ingredients before and they sound so tempting notice that he says I haven’t tried not I haven’t tried this is a key feature of connected speech you don’t need to say

The sound at the end of the word if it’s the same as the sound at the beginning of the next word the candidate also joins words together effectively in good connected speech if the first word ends with a consonant sound and the next word starts with a vowel sound you can run

Them together so our candidate says tried any and those ingredients showing features of natural connected speech like this will help you to get a high band score in pronunciation sometimes people ask what about the accent in our example the candidate certainly has an accent but

That’s not a problem you can still get a high score if your pronunciation is clear so now you know what to look out for in a response go back and listen to your recording did you use good pronunciation did you notice any errors in vocabulary and grammar one really

Good strategy for improving your speaking is to write down exactly what you said in your practice recording because it’s easier to analyze your language when it’s written down check if you remember to use correct tenses and a range of grammatical structures check your range of vocabulary see if you need

More synonyms perhaps you could use more adjectives to describe places people and feelings this will help you fix your errors before your exam and greatly improve your accuracy and your I score be sure to practice your speaking with lots of different topics try to write down as many relevant ideas as you can

In one minute then start speaking and try to extend your notes by adding more detail in description then listen back to your response and see if you could improve do this every day and you’ll soon see your confidence and ability rise if you if you would like an extra

Speaking part two task card to practice with download the free hardest question practice booklet by clicking the link in the description I hope you found this information helpful good luck with your speaking okay now let’s move on to the final part of the writing test in this

Part of the video we’re looking at task two in the AL writing test the essay we know students find this task very challenging because you have to analyze an essay prompt think of ideas write your essay and check your writing all in a fairly short space of time so we’re

Going to look at a task two essay prompt and see how to approach writing your answer and hopefully take away some of the stress of this task let’s get started in writing task 2 you have to write a formal essay it’s recommended that you spend 40 minutes on this task

And you have to write at least 250 words your essay is marked on four criteria task response which is your ideas coherence and cohesion which is your organization and structure lexical resource which is your vocabulary and grammatical range and accuracy which is grammar and punctuation task two is

Worth about 2third of your total writing score the rest comes from task one so why do candidates feel that task two is one of the most difficult parts of the a test well the first challenge is is understanding the topic and what the essay prompt is asking you to do if you

Misunderstand The Prompt and discuss the wrong thing or you don’t write about all the parts of the prompt you’ll score low on the task response Criterion and could end up with a low overall band score let’s have a look at the prompt we’ll be working with in this video it says in

The age of digital communication and social media face-to-face interactions are becoming less common some some people think that this is decreasing people’s ability to communicate well in person do you agree or disagree with this view in is the essay prompt always has two elements one is the topic that

Is what the essay will be about and the other is the task what the essay should do what are the two elements in this essay prompt well the general topic is digital communication and face-to-face communication and the task is to State an opinion because there’s a direct

Question do you agree or disagree but you need to go a bit deeper than that and make sure you really understand the specific area of the topic you’re being asked to discuss this will help you make sure that you’re addressing all the main parts of the prompt which is essential

If you want to get a high bandore and task response in this task there’s a suggestion that digital communication is replacing face-to-face interaction The Prompt says face-to-face interactions are becoming less common it also suggests that some people think this creates problems specifically that it’s decreasing people’s ability to

Communicate well in person notice that the task says do you agree or disagree with this view this view is a reference back to the idea that digital communication making face-to-face interactions less common is decreasing people’s ability to communicate well in person we can summarize this by saying

Do you agree or disagree that digital communication is reducing the quality of face-to-face interactions so to answer the question in the task you have to decide if you agree or disagree with this idea you must choose a position or opinion now there are several different types of task or questions that you

Might get in the essay prompt on test day which makes preparing for the essay more challenging some of the common tasks apart from giving your opinion are discuss two different views discuss the advantages and disadvantages of something give reasons for something or present solutions to a problem but no

Matter what prompt you get if you read it carefully and analyze the topic and the task you’ll always know what you need to write about so to do well in the task respon Criterion remember to ask yourself what’s the specific topic and what’s the task once you’ve understood

The topic and the task you need to come up with ideas and Arguments for your essay so when you’re preparing for task two you’ll need to practice generating ideas on a wide variety of topics because on test day you’ll need to think of ideas quickly as we’ve seen you first

Need to choose your position which for this essay is whether you agree or disagree with the view presented in the prompt then I suggest you need to think of two reasons for your position these will be the main ideas of your essay you also need to think of details

And examples to support your ideas two reasons or main ideas is a good number because it gives you two body paragraphs don’t try to come up with too many different ideas because you don’t have the time to write a lot of paragraphs writing more than three paragraphs s

Usually means that the ideas inside each paragraph are not sufficiently developed or supported another challenge is that your essay needs to be cohesive which means well organized and logical you must use a clear essay structure including an introduction and a conclusion as well as two or three body

Paragraphs so it’s essential that you spend a couple of minutes planning your essay organize your essay so that each body paragraph has one Focus or main idea then arrange the supporting ideas and examples inside each paragraph So they develop in a clear and logical way

If you have a plan you can follow it’ll be much easier to write an essay that flows well from one idea to the other and your score in coherence and cohesion will be higher another reason why this task is challenging is that you have to pay close attention to your use of

Vocabulary and grammar essays are form pieces of writing so you need to choose appropriate grammar structures words and phrases avoiding ones that are too casual or informal you need to demonstrate a good range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility The Examiner will also look at the Precision and

Accuracy of your expression for example whether you’re using correct collocations prepositions and appropriate synonyms and your spelling must be correct too your grammar is assessed in a similar Way range and accuracy The Examiner will assess the variety of the structures you use so your essay should contain a mix of

Simple and complex sentences they’ll also look at your errors how many mistakes you make and whether those errors are in basic grammar or in more advanced structures this also covers the use of Correct punctuation as you can see there’s a lot to think about and this makes it a

Demanding task if you’d like to try writing an essay on this topic yourself stop the video in a moment and answer the question in this task when we come back I’ll show you a sample answer in the hardest question practice booklet there’s space for you to write or type

Your response feel free to download it from the link in the description okay pause the video now and give yourself 40 minutes to write your essay okay how did you go let’s look at a sample response for this task and I’ll explain why the choices the student has

Made in their writing will give them a high score for this essay we’ll start with the introduction with the prevalence of communication technology people are interacting in person less and less often as you can see it’s a paraphrase of the first sentence in the prompt the job of the first sentence is

To introduce the general topic of your essay but it’s important not to just copy The Prompt so writing the ideas in the prompt in your own words is the best way to go here the second sentence is I believe this has a negative impact on their ability to communicate effectively

Face to face and this is where the writer has stated their opinion in opinion essays your position needs to be very clear throughout don’t wait until the concl clusion to express it make it clear in the introduction so this introduction is just two sentences is that enough

Absolutely in fact it’s ideal for an essay of this length some candidates make the mistake of writing long introductions but this is not a good idea the length of an essay introduction should be about 10% of the overall word count this essay is 267 words long and the introduction is

29 words this is perfectly fine being concise also helps avoid repetition the result is a clear statement of what the essay is about and the opinion which is how you should write to get a high score so now let’s move on to the first body paragraph which will need to discuss the

First reason why the writer thinks that in-person interactions suffer as a result of people communicating online too much let’s see how this is candidate explains explains it before we look at the body notice that after the introduction the student has skipped one full line to indicate a new paragraph

This is a good idea because it shows the examiner that you have deliberately divided your writing into paragraphs which is a key requirement of the coherence and cohesion Criterion the first body paragraph starts the main impact of digital interactions on in-person conversations is in the development of essential communication

Skills this first sentence in a body paragraph is called a topic sentence and it should tell the reader exactly what the paragraph will be about from reading this sentence it’s clear that the paragraph will explain how digital communication affects the ability to develop important communication skills remember every body paragraph should

Start with a topic sentence it’s a short simple sentence that doesn’t go into details don’t start your paragraph with examples or or specific details you must first introduce your idea then the next three or four sentences should extend explain and support this idea let me

Show you what I mean feel free to pause the video to read the paragraph if you need to when you read this paragraph you can see that after the topic sentence it first explains the key skills needed for face-to-face communication understanding non-verbal cues such as facial expressions body

Language and tone of voice the next few sentences extend the main idea by showing how digital interactions give people fewer opportunities to practice these skills notice how the sentences are linked the writer has used linking phrases and referencing words such as these in contrast so thus to create

Coherence and cohesion in the paragraph by making sure the ideas flow smoothly there are five sentences in the paragraph and they support and extend the main idea this is what we mean by paragraph development and it allows you to get a high band score for both task response and coherence and cohesion and

There is a key thing the writer does at the end of the paragraph that shows they really understand how to logically structure an argument the final sentence is thus the decline in face-to-face interactions is driving individuals of the opportunity to fine-tune their non-verbal communication skills which are essential for Effective personal

Communication this sentence links the paragraph back to the position the writer stated in the introduction that communication technology has a negative impact on people’s ability to communicate face Toof face it shows the reader how the main idea in this paragraph supports the overall opinion this is an excellent technique to use to

Make make your argument clear and logical now let’s look at grammar remember that for a high score we want to see a variety of simple and complex sentences as well as a range of structures within them it’s a good idea to keep the first sentence simple because remember it’s your topic

Sentence it doesn’t explain anything it only introduces the idea the other sentences are a mixture of simple sentences like the second one and complex sentences with multiple Clauses added in different ways for example here the writer has used the conjunction so to join two Clauses together and in the

Last sentence they’ve used a relative Clause to add additional information there’s also some variety in the structures the writer has used for instance they’ve used a passive verb are required comparatives such as more nuanced and fewer opportunities and a present continuous verb is depriving to show something that is currently

Developing so there’s range and accuracy in the grammar here now we’ll look at the second body paragraph if the writer’s cohesion is good it should follow a similar structure to the first one let’s find out pause the video to read the paragraph if you need to this paragraph also starts with a topic

Sentence introducing another reason for the writer’s position the second sentence explains it further and it’s a conditional sentence so that’s adding to the variety of grammar structures sentence three starts with a referencing word this which is a great way to link ideas and create a cohesive Flow by reducing repetition in your writing

There’s another referencing word in sentence four these attributes and this sentence has a relative Clause the last sentence has a linking word consequently and as in the first body paragraph the writer has used this final sentence to show how the second main idea supports their overall position so we’ve looked

At the organization and gramar in the body paragraphs let’s now have a look at some examples of the vocabulary the writer has used there’s a great range of nouns and collocations used flexibly and accurately for example nonverbal cues valuable context elements misunderstandings important feature empathy active listening needs of others

Attributes digital means on a deeper level there’s a wide variety of verbs employ interpret facilitate deprive find tune stimulate engage convey as well as some less common adjectives and adverbs nuanced attuned impersonal transactional adap dep empathetically so overall this writer has shown range and accuracy which is great another feature

Of a successful Tas two response is the use of what’s called hedging hedging is cautious language that makes formal writing sound more factual and objective it helps you avoid making generalizations that are not always true I’ll show you a few examples in this essay formal writing needs to be

Reasonable and believable so we want to avoid statements that are too strong hedging words and word forms help us to soften the language making our arguments more convincing so here we say often lack instead of always lacks fewer opportunities as opposed to few opportunities the word potentially shows

That the writer isn’t trying to suggest that this happens all the time other hedging words include tend to and may if you want to take your writing getting to the next level I encourage you to use hedging in your essays it will help you with your score for task response

Because it will make your ideas seem more reasonable and it will help you with your score for lexical resource because it will add variety to your vocabulary it’s a win-win now we’ll look at the final paragraph of this essay the conclusion the conclusion should start with a linking phrase that makes it

Clear that this is your final paragraph and here the writer has used two conclude the first sentence is to conclude in my opinion the reduction in face-to-face interactions is negatively affecting people’s ability to communicate effectively and meaningfully you can see that it contains the opinion the writer stated in the introduction

Yes you need to repeat your position in the conclusion the last sentence of this conclusion says to address this issue individuals should prioritize and actively engage in face-to-face en encounters whenever possible this is what we call a final comment it’s a way to wrap up your essay so that the reader

Feels that the essay has come to a natural end one way of making a final comment is by offering a solution to the issue you discussed which is what the writer has done another way is to summarize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs or make a prediction

About what might happen regarding the issue in the future so what makes this a highle task two response let’s summarize what we’ve seen the essay addresses the topic and the task it clearly states the writer’s opinion and it answers all the main parts of the prompt the essay is well structured and

Logically organized it includes paragraphs which focus on one main idea expressed in a topic sentence the ideas are developed explained extended and Illustrated with examples a wide range of grammar and vocabulary is used with a high level of accuracy it’s clear that this is candidate used excellent time management skills to plan
