Ingredients:
2 medium russet potato
2 tablespoons corn starch
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mint powder (sukha podina)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (kali mirch)
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/8 teaspoon citric acid (tatri)
Oil to fry

Today I will be making masala french fries. An interesting twist to french fries and great to serve as an appetizer. Or serve with afternoon tea or coffee. This recipe will serve 2-4. We need, 2 medium size russet potatoes 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon of dry mint leaves

1/2 teaspoon of red pepper 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper 1/8 teaspoon of citric acid So first we are going to peel the potatoes and cut them in french fires. I have cut the french fries. And I am going to put salt on it. Mix it well.

And let it sit for about 3-4 minutes. I will turn on the heat, on medium high. And mix make the spice mix. So here I have corn starch. Mint Red pepper Black pepper And citric acid. So mix it well. This is a spice mix for our french fries.

This has been about 4 minutes so I will pat dry these french fries. And as you this salt has left lot of water. So lightly pat dry. And it’s time to add the spices. So just sprinkle the spice over. And mix it well. And as you see you can already

These potatoes are picking up all the spices. And getting colorful. If you pat dry little too much like I did just wet your fingers and just sprinkle little bit few drops of water. So this looks ready. Let’s check if our oil is done. It’s hot enough. We will put one French fry

And it’s sizzling. Oil is ready. And it should take about 5-6 minutes before they are golden brown. So just stir little bit in beginning so they don’t get stick to each other. And see how beautiful they are looking. French fries are looking good. They are almost ready another about half a minute.

See how colorful they are looking. It has been about 5 minutes. And fries are ready. So just repeat the same way while you make all the masala fries. Tilt your stainer little bit before you take them out. So you are taking all the extra oil right here.

Fries are looking very crispy and very nice with all these spices. I am really ready to try and I am ready to serve this with afternoon tea to my family. Thank you. And I will see you again with a new recipe.

  1. Tossing cornstarch was a great idea to make them super crispy and tasty. I added a spoon of garlic powder to the mixture since I love the garlicky flavour in fries 😉

  2. Are Masala fries popular in India only or maybe in neighboring countries, or are they are also popular abroad, in the Arab world for example, or the Asian world, too? I have never seen them in Asia (Japan, Singapore, Philippines) nor in Europe or the US, so that is why I ask. Are they called both Masala Fries and Masala French Fries or is there some one "right" name for them? For example, in the US, French fries can be shortened to fries but typically that is the full name. However, in Great Britain, they're of course known as Chips, as you likely know. What about Masala French fries?

Nice job on your meal, it looks delicious! 🙂
