Hi friends in this video. Let’s talk about which coffee is the healthiest. And the answer you will see is not simply based on aroma or superior taste, how the bean is roasted, what you put in your coffee and whether you drink it filtered
Or instant can all change the health benefits and risks to drinking coffee. Now, in this video, we will explore the health differences between light, medium and dark, twisted beans and filtered instant brewed and decaffeinated coffee. We will explore when you should drink your coffee.
We will talk about the effects of coffee with and without caffeine on your body weight, diabetes and gout with cholesterol and iron levels, heartburn, asthma and liver cancer and lastly, we will discuss who really shouldn’t drink coffee. Globally, Hundreds of billions of cups are consumed every year,
And some people drink actually pounds of coffee in a year. Now, if you drink that much coffee, it will definitely impact your health. Did you know that coffee is actually from the cherry fruit? That’s why lightly roasted have more fruity aroma and are more acidic. Coffee is the second most popular
Beverage around the world and believed to have started in Ethiopia. Exported to Europe and after it was blessed by the Catholic Pope Clement, the eighth. It was exported in the 18th century to the Americas. Now Brazil is a number one producer of coffee, and there are basically two types of commercially available coffee.
Gourmet or instant. 70% of the market is filled with gourmet coffee from the more expensive coffee Arabica. Originally from Ethiopia, it requires milder temperatures and more rain to grow. Nescafé the first global instant coffee sensation, actually supplied the US military with instant coffee, this during World
War Two and instant coffee and blends are made from the less expensive coffee you can afford. Robusta, which occupies 30% of the world’s market. Now all coffee beans are roasted to bring out the flavor and aroma. And there are basically four different types of roast.
Number one is light roast, which retains the most of its original fruity flavor as well as is nutrients and acidity. Number two is medium roast. It’s heated to give the first crack, and this is a little bit acidic. Number three is medium
Dark roast where it gets a second crack, which releases some oil from the sea. And for health purposes, medium roast, medium, dark roast are pretty much the same. And number four, dark roast dispense a longer time on heat and thus has a most oil release.
And at the same time, the least amount of nutrients is retained in dark roasted beans. Now there are several ways people drink coffee. First, all coffee beans are grounded and it’s best to grind the coffee within two weeks of consumption to maintain its freshness.
Now, if your coffee tastes bitter, it may be that the grind is too fine and if taste you flat the grind maybe to coarse it is recommended you put 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee ground for every six ounces of water. And of course you can adjust that to taste.
Now the brewing method can take 12 hours like a cold brew or a 20 seconds like espresso. Hot water will extract more flavor from the typical coffee machines. Take about 5 minutes to make a cup versus a manual French press that can take 2 to 4 minutes.
Now, if you want more flavor, use hotter water and longer brewing time. But be careful not to burn yourself Now. When should you drink coffee? Most people drink their coffee when they wake up because they need to wake up. But if that’s the case, it’s best not to drink coffee immediately
After waking up so that you don’t get the crash when the caffeine wears out. Wait about an hour and a half after you wake up. Now, this is because caffeine blocks a sleeping neurochemical called adenosine from landing on its receptors,
And it takes your body at least an hour to clear adenosine out of your system. And caffeine can inhibit this natural clearance. Now, many people drink coffee with their meals or after meals. And if you’re iron deficient, that’s probably not a good idea,
Because coffee can reduce the absorption of iron from your food by 39%. And this effect can even occur an hour after you eat. And this is probably because it takes at least 2 hours to clear food in your stomach. So it’s best to drink coffee an hour
Before eating to prevent this iron inhibition. Now, iron is a double edged sword. Higher levels increase the risk of diabetes and gout. And it just so happens that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of diabetes and gout. And maybe it’s because it lowers iron absorption.
Now, if you use coffee to wake up in the morning, that is the effect of caffeine. Darker roast beans simply have less caffeine because roasting removes the caffeine. Robust coffee beans actually have twice as much caffeine than Arabica beans. So instant and blended have more caffeine than gourmet.
Have you ever wondered why plants even make caffeine? Caffeine is actually a natural pesticide for the plant, a part of its own chemical weapons against all things trying to eat it since it is literally stuff caffeine is anti bacterial antifungal and can actually sterilize
The insects that eat it and deter competing plants in the soil. And fortunately, coffee plants ultimately die from their own build up of caffeine. When you drink a cup of coffee, 90% of caffeine enters your bloodstream from your stomach within 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your biology,
Caffeine can remain as high in your body for 3 hours to 10 hours. Substances that inhibit your liver from metabolizing caffeine like alcohol and medications can all prolong the half life of caffeine in your body. Now, caffeine does a number of things to your body in your brain.
It can wake you up in your eye. It actually increases your eye pressure. And that can lead to glaucoma in your heart. It appears to reduce your blood flow and that can lead to heart attacks in your lungs. It actually appears to open up your airways and can benefit those with asthma.
And in your gut, it gives you reflux and makes you poop. And by the way, in your bladder, it makes you pee long term use of coffee can even affect how your blood clots. Now, coffee isn’t the only bean with caffeine. Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in 60 different plants,
Including Coca Cola, nuts and yerba mate. Now, I’m sure you’ve tasted coffee, coca and tea and you’ve probably also tasted the coconut as it’s used to flavor Coca cola beverages. Coffee has been shown to reduce inflammation. It has over 1000 ingredients, including antioxidants, polyphenols that are very anti-inflammatory.
However, dark roasted coffees may have very little polyphenols like chlorogenic acid that can be reduced by 90% from the roasting. And their range is quite varied depending on how much they roasted. So Starbucks had seven milligrams of chlorogenic acid in their coffee while other brands had 157 milligrams.
And there is even more polyphenols in the green and roasted coffee bean. Decaffeinated coffee and instant coffees are still rich with chlorogenic acid. Now, what should you add to your coffee that I’m sure many people enjoy? Coffee with coffee creamers, dairy and plant milks. Those are all popular additives, and each of these
Have their own health effects. But I’m really going to talk about how they interact with your coffee. Dairy proteins actually bind to polyphenols and can block their absorption. So if you add dairy like milk or some coffee creamer with casein protein, just know that you can block the anti-inflammatory benefits of coffee.
So if you put a splash of milk in your coffee, that can reduce it by as much as 50%. And if you drink something like a latte, while there may be only 3% of polyphenols left. So if you need to add milk, consider soy milk because your gut microbiome
Prevents soy protein from reducing the polyphenol content in your coffee. Now, your liver is your number one metabolic organ, and people who have exposed themselves to liver toxins like alcohol, cigarettes or hepatitis C virus actually appear to benefit from drinking coffee. Alcoholics who drink at least two cups of coffee
Daily can reduce your risk of liver cancer by 50%. Now, if you are a smoker, drinking twice as much coffee or four cups or more a day can reduce your risk of liver cancer too. Coffee appears to be beneficial to those with hepatitis C virus as well.
Now, don’t get me wrong, alcoholics and smokers really should get rid of the alcohol and the cigarets, but they also suffer from a multitude of other health problems that really no food can cure. The greatest benefit is to not expose yourself to these toxins.
However, I can’t deny that drinking coffee has been shown to reduce oxidative DNA damage, increase the death of virus infected cells and reduce fibrosis, which together all decrease the risk of liver cancer. Coffee is known to help people reduce weight,
And it’s not just because of the caffeine now which coffee has the best results. While for folks who are already overweight, drinking two cups of dark roasted coffee daily seems to help them lose about 6 pounds in a month. But this didn’t happen when they drank medium roasted coffees.
Now, I mentioned that coffee can inhibit blood flow, while coffee also has been known for decades to increase cholesterol by 10% because it contains fats called coffee, salt and call. We all. The best way to avoid elevated cholesterol is to make sure all the coffee great is filtered through paper.
And just by paper filtering your coffee, you eliminate 90% of the caffeine straw from any type of coffee. Now, lighter and medium roasted coffees actually had twice as much cholesterol raising fats as dark roasted coffees. So non paper filter coffees like boiled French press and Turkish coffees and even
Espresso can all elevate your cholesterol percolated and instant coffees, both a pretty low affects on cholesterol, even without the paper filter. However, if you have very high cholesterol, even paper filtered coffee can significantly increase your cholesterol. So for those who have high cholesterol, try to drink low cafe style coffees,
Which will be dark roasted greens, make sure it’s coarsely ground and always drink it through a paper filter. And if that doesn’t work, considered switching your caffeinated drink to tea. Now lots of people who drink coffee complain of heartburn because caffeine relaxes a muscle that separates the food
Between your food pipe and your stomach. Now, this muscle is called the esophageal sphincter, and it should be closed by when it’s open. And if you’re making more acid in your stomach, you get more reflux. And this results in this discussion of heartburn.
And it seems the darker the roasted coffee, the less stomach acid production, whereas lighter medium Rosa Coffee’s actually increased stomach acid production. Otherwise low acid coffee has not been really shown to improve heartburn symptoms compared to regular roasted coffee. Now drinking some coffee,
But not more than four cups a day can lower your risk of asthma. Many asthma attacks report that they find relief when they drink some coffee. And this makes sense because caffeine is known to open your airways. Theophylline is a prescription drug that happens to be a caffeine
Derivative, which people use for asthma control. But don’t confuse the root cause and triggers of asthma with the medications and food used for relief. It is better to identify the root causes of asthma because you really want to prevent that trigger. So who shouldn’t drink coffee if you have sleeping issues?
Coffee will definitely make that worse as it inhibits your natural ability to relax. If you metabolize caffeine slowly and have acyp1, a two ac or a CC genotype, you are at higher risk of high blood pressure, a heart attack, diabetes and kidney dysfunction with increased coffee consumption.
If you have glaucoma or a strong family history of glaucoma, you should seriously consider limiting your coffee or avoiding all caffeinated beverages due to the elevated risk of increasing your eye pressures. Now, if you have reflux, it seems dark roasted is best.
If your heart is compromised like heart vessel diseases, you really should check with your cardiologist to see if it’s even safe to drink coffee. If you have urinary incontinence, caffeine will make that worse and if you have high cholesterol, remember dark roasted and paper filtered coffee
Would work best to not elevate your cholesterol. And if you really want to learn how to reduce your cholesterol and get metabolically healthy, check out the next video.

If you have a weak stomach – Don't drink coffee – ☕ .
Coffee & tea is not something we should be drinking at all. I eat only meat, eggs, fish, salt, water (with some lemon). Both coffee and tea cause anxiety and response is delayed by at least 10 hours. Tea caused anxiety is more stronger than from coffee. When I have coffee in the morning I feel it’s effect for at least 2 days. I’m anxious when I go to bad. My digestion is disrupted for at least 3 days. Since coffee disrupts sleep all other so called benefits are bogus and irrelevant.
Hi Dr Liu, this was an informative video about the health effects of coffee on people. Please consider doing a video about Organic coffee beans versus coffee beans with Glyphosate residue.
Glyphosate is grown into the protein structures inside the coffee plant where it is able to displace Glycine. This is also how it bioaccumulates up the food chain.
To point out the importance of Glycine (which is an amino acid necessary for all animal life), then consider that 1/3 of collagen is composed of Glycine.
Have you noticed the trend of people supplementing collagen in the last ten years?
Also enzymes that incorporate Glyphosate in place of Glycine don’t have properly folded proteins and probably don’t function correctly.
Cheers

So much information in such a short video, I think that I need to watch it a few more times.
Coffee is the most controversial product on this planet.
You'll be constantly bombarded with beneficially reasons to consume it and at the same time you'll get tons of reasons on how bad is for your health. And that is a never ending debate lasting for decades by now.
New Sub 😛… I like to drink my coffee with half and half and one pack of stevia with a joint. Does Mary Juana affect this in anyway like cigarettes?
Bulletproof coffee.
Hard to take her seriously when she adds an x to espresso.
Coffee doesn’t lose caffeine when roasting from light to dark. Bean for bean, it is the same. You use more beans per gram of dark roast, so dark roast cup of coffee generally has more caffeine.
Light roast is the best and healthiest as it retains nutrients.
I prefer my coffee black and without sugar. Everything else is just some other drink with coffee in it.
What is going on? I had to watch over 20 minutes of advertisements before I could watch Dr. Liu's video? This has happened on other channels as well. If this is the new YouTube, I'm gone…
Is mushroom coffee good for you as it is projected in the media ?
So glad this video came across my feed! I've watched several of your videos already. I thought I've heard it all (I'm a nutrition hobbyist :), but I've learned some new things from just a few of your videos. It's good to have someone level headed and doesn't take us down rabbit holes.
Indepth. I guess I never really knew my coffee. I've tried all ranges of coffee over the years and settled on dark french roast a few decades ago and have pretty much stayed the course since. I do drink a latte or two from time to time, but mostly dark roast at home.
