Did you know that the baking parchment we use everyday has over 2000 years of history?
It was invented by the ancient Egyptians back in the ptolemaic dynasty around 305 to 30 BC. Although it wasn’t used for cooking back then. But instead for writing on and is made out of animal skin.
One of the earliest documented usage for cooking is by this guy. Marcus Gravius Apicius. He was a Roman gourmet and thought to be the author of the first ever cookbook. And he mentions the use of parchment paper to wrap lamb skewers. Presumably to keep the meat moist, though we don’t know for sure.
This form of parchment paper pretty much stayed the same for almost 2000 years until 1847 when these 2 french scientists invented a process for plant based parchment paper, mainly for writing on.
Fast forward 12 years to 1859, an article in The Pharmaceutical Journal suggests that it has a potential use in cooking and thus formalising parchment paper’s place in the kitchen.
Since then, there have been many innovations like the silicone matt. So Next time pick one up, just spare 1 moment to appreciate the 2000 years of innovation that got us here
