April 8, 1974: Both American Julia Child and Englishman Graham Kerr, hosts of the PBS shows “The French Chef” and “The Galloping Gourmet,” respectively, inspired admiration from their viewers. Both also inspired their share of jokes.
On this show, Charles Nelson Reilly did not mention that Kerr had sued him, and the TV show he had been on, the CBS sitcom “Arnie,” for creating a character called The Giddyap Gourmet, and that it essentially killed that show. Of course, that freed Charles up to appear on “Match Game,” which is how he’s best remembered. But on a 1977 show, when there was another Galloping Gourmet question, he mentioned it.
