European football, France and Switzerland were involved in yet another high-scoring thriller. In what can be called the upset of the tournament, World Cup winners France were knocked out by an insurgent Switzerland in a penalty shootout. Haris Seferovic gave the Swiss the lead in the 15th minute. But it was the French who reigned supreme and scored three goals on the trot in the second half after Ricardo Rodriguez’s missed penalty. Karim Benzema scored twice and Paul Pogba netted a belter to give France a two-goal cushion. But the Swizz had other plans in mind as Seferovic pulled one back in the 81st minute and Mario Gavranovic scored the equaliser all the way in the 90th minute. Extra time was not enough to separate the sides as the game went into a penalty shootout. It was Yann Sommer who turned out to be the hero for the Swiss as he denied Kylian Mbappe from the spot to take his side through to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020
