Pinet is a small town in the south of France.
After a gruelling bike ride I had to stop here for water, however the only place open was this Wine Château.
It proved to be a very interesting place. I drank cold sweet grape juice, which quenched my thirst and energised me.
Then I discovered Picpoul wine and its History. Part of the Languedoc Region, which is rich in red wine, this is a lively white, best paired with only the freshest oysters.
This area used to belong to a religious community. So the wine was used in ceremonies and liturgy. It was preferred to red wine because priests didn’t have to wash the cups as often as they would have with red.
The French revolution confiscated the clergy’s lands.
It did not ruin the wine tradition though. This Picpoul is produced by women wine makers. From mother to daughter spanning 11 generations.
So if you come across it don’t forget to have a toast celebrating womanhood!
