Caramelized onions are one of my favourite things to make because theyre so versatile.
If you want to add depth to your caramelized onions heres what you do:
Throughout the cooking process you deglaze multiple times.
The first time you deglaze is when you can add just about any liquid you want. ie..: wine, beer, cognac, gin, vodka, soy suace, stock, balsamic vinegar, etc…
through out the cooking process you can further the flavour by adding dried or fresh herbs. you can never go wrong with rosemary and thyme.
if you want to make it even more sweet ive seen people add maple syrup, brown sugar, or honey.
(I personally think its sweet enough on its own)
at the end – you can finish it with some butter to give it a richer texture.
There are endless possibilities and combinations. This is why I love making it.
