We visited Toulon and the Area of Mont Faron in March 2019. There is a nice drive to the Top of Mont Faron with beautiful view of the french riviera, the Bay of Toulon and Port of Toulon.
Toulon is a city on the French Riviera and a large port on the Mediterranean coast, with a major naval base. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Toulon is the capital of the Var department.
The Commune of Toulon has a population of 165,514 people (2009), making it France’s 15th-largest city. It is the centre of an urban area with 559,421 inhabitants (2008), the ninth largest in France. Toulon is the fourth-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille, Nice and Montpellier.
Toulon is an important centre for naval construction, fishing, wine making, and the manufacture of aeronautical equipment, armaments, maps, paper, tobacco, printing, shoes, and electronic equipment.
The military port of Toulon is the major naval centre on France’s Mediterranean coast, home of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and her battle group. The French Mediterranean Fleet is based in Toulon.
Mont Faron is a mountain overlooking the city and roadstead of Toulon, France. It is 584m high. At its peak is a memorial dedicated to the 1944 Allied landings in Provence (Operation Dragoon), and to the liberation of Toulon.
The top can be reached either by a cable car from Toulon, or by a steep and narrow road which ascends from the west side and descends on the east side. The road is one of the most challenging stages of the annual Paris–Nice and Tour Méditerranéen bicycle races. From 1952 to 1970, there was a Mont Faron hill climb time trial race.
Near the summit there is a zoo which covers an area of 1.5 hectares.

Faron Cablecar – Téléphérique du Mont Faron
Le mont Faron est un sommet calcaire, faisant partie des monts toulonnais, qui culmine à 584 mètres et surplombe la ville de Toulon, dans le Var (France).
Un réseau de fortifications défensives datant des xviie et xviiie siècles est toujours visible ; il servait à la défense des accès maritimes puis terrestres au port militaire de la ville. Neuf forts veillent sur la rade : le fort Saint-Antoine, la tour de l’Ubac, la tour Beaumont, le Sanctuaire de Notre-Dame du Faron (ancienne poudrière), le retranchement de Leydet, la caserne du Centre, le fort de la Croix-Faron, l’Impluvium et le fort Faron. La tour Beaumont a été construite en 1845 pour défendre et surveiller la rade, elle est maintenant aménagée en musée Mémorial du Débarquement des Alliés d’août 1944.
Un téléphérique permet d’accéder au sommet en partant de la ville de Toulon. Le sommet, assez plat, abrite le Mémorial du débarquement en Provence (opération Anvil Dragoon) et le zoo du Mont Faron spécialisé dans l’élevage de félins.
Le sommet est également accessible par une route à une voie (la montée se fait à l’ouest et la descente par l’est de la montagne). La montée comme la descente offrent des points de vue très spectaculaires sur la rade de Toulon.
Pour accéder au mont Faron, il existe un téléphérique. C’est l’un des rares que l’on peut trouver en milieu urbain (avec par exemple Grenoble, Barcelone, Brest ou Rio de Janeiro) et qui permet aux cyclistes de se déplacer plus facilement.
