In our latest video, we’re taking you back to Disney for a Port Orleans French Quarter tour where we try the Boozy Beignets!
Port Orleans French Quarter (POFQ) is part of the Walt Disney World Port Orleans Resort complex which also includes Port Orleans Riverside. POFQ is the smaller of the two resorts and it offers a quieter, more serene experience. It’s set up with several 3 story buildings for hotel rooms, some with views of the Sassagoula River. Courtyards with fountains dot the landscaping and provide a relaxing way to unwind.
Back in the early 1980s, Disney had an idea to build a hotel within its shopping district, now known as Disney Springs. It was to be designed to evoke the relaxing laid-back feel of the city of New Orleans, very reminiscent of Disneyland’s New Orleans Square. Those ideas shifted and changed and eventually work began on POFQ in 1989. However, instead of being located directly within the rapidly expanding Disney Village Marketplace area, it was relocated to create a brand new themed area to be accessed via a new waterway.
Disney’s Port Orleans Resort first opened its doors to the public on 17th May 1991. Originally featuring just 432 guest rooms in three buildings, it was linked back to the existing Disney Village Marketplace by the Sassagoula River, a completely man-made 2½ mile waterway named after the Native American word for the Mississippi.
On 1st April 2001, Port Orleans and Dixie Landings, located right next door to Port Orleans Resort, officially merged to form one large resort. The combined resort was now to be called Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, with the area formerly known just as Port Orleans changing its name to Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter and the area formerly known as Dixie Landings changing its name to Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside.
