First time trying QLD wine. From Ballandean, Granite Belt GI. Despite Queensland being subtropical, the Granite Belt reaches altitudes north of 1000m in some zones, and is inland enough to have a high diurnal range providing cold nights.
Some context: produced by La Petite Mort, 2022, 13.4% abv, qvevri, 192 days on skins
Tasting Notes:
nose ~ candied ginger and orange peel, orange jelly bean, candied orange peel on nose with flecks of aniseed too.
palate ~
chopping acidity and phenolic bite from extended time on skins in qvevri. slightly sappy (glycerol), slightly aqueous lending to medium body
primary: plenty of orange fruits: kumquat and persimmon, even some pear?
secondary: an underlying permeation of pestled curry spices—clove and garam masala.
there’s even a hint of Dorito’s / cheese nachos dust, perhaps from lees work & the qvevri?
had with sushi/sashimi (I maintain that orange wine and sushi is one of the best pairings). Would do immensely well with Midde eastern/Levantine cuisine as well as Indian.
