I know that aesthetically having the furniture a few inches away from the wall makes a living room feel less cold and distant and warmer and inviting. However, for a couple of years I had the furniture against the wall for functional purposes. We live in a small apartment and our living room must function as our dining room. Having the furniture pulled forward, especially because the rug lies too close to the dining table, interferes w easily pulling our bench out to sit at the table. Plus, theres a gap behind the couch now that’s going to require regular cleaning. Although, small nuisance’s, I admit that the look is a little more pleasing, and we could probably make it work (my partner and I rarely sit at the bench and I could clean behind the couch less frequently and deal w the side table tilting (since it is on uneven flooring).
I think that we can test it out for a week and see how it works for us. We can easily put the furniture back, worst case scenario.
What do you think, furniture against the wall or not? – very last picture is with the furniture pulled away from the wall.
Ps – I kind feel attached to the current layout of the furniture as I have already tried putting it at different angles/positions and this layout seemed to function better.
