Howdy, I've been revamping my staircase and have pretty much gotten to the point where I need to bite the bullet and cut the runner to fit. But I can't decide how best to do it.

I always assumed the top should be like it is now, but my wife thinks I should cut the end off and run it straight into the fake final step. Once it gets there, I'm still unclear what to specifically do with it there. I have spare stair rods, but to use one I figure it'd really need to come out the other side and end with a proper end like it currently has. I could make some other wooden plate to screw down on top of it in the corner?!

Same for the bottom in the 2nd picture, she says to run it just vertically down the final riser and stop clean into the floor, without the whipped end. I'm less sure about this end. Certainly it's not going to just run into the toilet like it currently is!

Obviously I could keep both ends (fixing one end back on after chopping a section out, keep just one, or ditch both (would then be a good rug potentially if I can join the ends…)

Any suggestions welcome, especially good ones people all agree on!

Why are you putting in a runner? Sounds like more work for cleaning and in my rug/runner experience, these dont last as well as a professionally installed carpet that could serve the purpose of what you are looking for. They shred, warp around the corners, and the wear and tear kills the looks as well functionality

Logically, I wan to agree with you, but my kneejerk reaction after looking at the picture was that it looked wrong– that the rug needs to run into the step. Curious to see what others say!

I’m confused? Too short at the top but too long at the bottom. Isn’t the answer, pull it up and anchor it on both ends with double sided carpet tape?

Put a rug underneath it the size of the space

Why not get rid of the fake step? And the wood is much more attractive than the runner.
