Why is the baguette so important in France? In this video, I explain why the French baguette is not just bread, but a protected part of French culture, with legal rules, national pride, and even UNESCO recognition.
In many countries, bread is just bread. In France, naturally, things became more dramatic.
In this video, I explore why the baguette holds such a special place in French life, how French law defines a baguette de tradition française, and why the culture and artisanal know-how behind baguette bread were recognised by UNESCO.
This is not just a video about food. It is a video about France being intensely, gloriously French: turning a loaf into identity, ritual, philosophy, and mild bakery-related emotional instability.
If you love French culture, life in France, French food, or the strange little details that explain how this country thinks, this one is for you.

After viewing this video I have a feeling before eating my next baguette I’ll be genuflecting wholeheartedly!
I think the baguette is also a matter of survival. You could live on them if you had to, and I've relied on them for Lent.
You ought to speak about French schools. One of my observations of France versus the US and UK is that France is not necessarily as kid-friendly as those other countries are. Frustration is part of a French child's upbringing.
I've never found a baguette outside of France that ever came close to the great taste and texture of a genuine French one.
